We only drive our Prius and leave our Toyota 4Runner in the garage (although this is also a great car). I've found that we have more than enough room to haul the kid, dog and all the childhood accessories on regular 200 mile trips to visit the grandparents. The Prius is bigger than it looks and is great fun to drive...don't write it off yet! I'm currently getting 50mpg actual with my daily 40mi commute to work and with our regular day-to-day driving. I LOVE THIS CAR!

" The FWD Ford Escape Hybrid is rated at 34 city / 30 highway. The AWD FEH is rated at 29/27.

What I'm getting at is that thru every day use the Prius has all too surprisingly made life easy. The Hatchback has been around quite some time. Toyota has improved the mousetrap. By the way ....When we take the dogs, as we often do, we flip the passenger side (wider) seat down and still get the little grandson in comfortably.

You know we live in a topsy-turvy world when anyone thinks a spacious four door Prius sedan that gets over 40 MPG is not "practical". Wow. The Prius is, in fact, the very definition of practical. Perhaps our 'me-me-me-generation' expectations are what's impractical.

Do you think that the new TOYOTA PRIUS will have a STALLING PROBLEM also? Do you think it will suffer from TOYOTAS FAMOUS ENGINE SLUDGE COVER UP that my CAMRY HAD? How about its CAMSHAFT BREAKING and DRIVESHAFT VIBRATION like my sons new TOYOTA TUNDRA? I guess Toyota hasn't paid its tab to the media to hide these problems. As a former Toyota owner I won't ride in one or follow behind one on the road. I wouldn't want anything to fall off and hit me.

My sons Tundra barely gets 10MPG when it runs. Nissan Titan ranks at the bottom for MPG with it. The domestics are all coming out with Hybrid systems for their pickups. GM already has it in some of their SUV's. I used to be a domestic basher like you. Now I'm smarter than just using the old "Detroit punching bag" for every problem known to man. Try spell check next time genius.

From the late 90's to 2005 I drove that commute in a 97 LE Camry then a 2000 LE Camry. Both were dead solid perfect probably just as your Avy is. But when fuel went to $3 / gal right after Katrina hit I made the decision to insure myself against future price increases. In Nov 05 I got my Prius and have found it to be the best vehicle I've ever commuted in. I like the seating better than the 4 prior Camry's. It gets 47.7 mpg day in and day out ( every tank and every mile recorded by hand ). It has had nothing but oil and filters and a replacement set of Goodyears at 50K mi as maintenance. At the time I bought it, It had far more safety features than any of the prior Camry's ( not true of the new models though ). Right now I'm at 76,000 mi in 30 mo's and it too has been dead solid perfect. Since it's just a commuting tool I can't ask any more of it. Except.... that it's a far more useful vehicle than any Camry or Corolla sedan or Avalon or Fusion or Altima or Sentra, etc etc etc. Why? As a 5-door hatch it can carry 'stuff' that no other vehicle except a 5-door hatch or small CUV or small truck can handle. It's one of the 'hidden' delights discovered several months after ownership. The one 'drawback' it's nowhere near as quiet as a Camry in terms of sound isolation. So it will not be near as quiet as an Avy either. It does have cool 'toys' though. It was the first mass marketed vehicle to have SKS, BT, and an $800 upcharge for in-dash Navi....and it gets 47.7 mpg all day at 63 mph. It's interesting to see someone else that had the same unique situation as yours. We brought a 2004 Camry SE V6 to replace my 1990 Acura Legend. The wife liked the Camry so much that she wanted to drive it to work instead and I ended up with her old 97 Avalon. The Avalon is a fine car and gets about 24 mpg. But when I add up my gas bill for April, it's $469! That's when we start talking about getting a prius. Instead for giving our money away to the oil compay, I finally broken down and ordered a prius on May 12. It's a Touring w/ pkg 2. The guy said it'll be here in three weeks. Impatiently waiting... I also wish it would hurry up or it may cost 50 dollars to fill it up. Ha Ha. I sure hope I made a wise decision buying the Prius.
