Comparison Test: 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 vs. 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt
- Though the Mustang Bullitt is 637 pounds lighter than the Challenger and has shorter overall gearing, the mighty Challenger ruled on the drag strip. The Hemi simply pulled its weight, even in this 4,154-pound wrapper.

I really like the looks of the Challenger, it's so cool!
But let's face facts- as sportscars go, a WRX or EVO will spank either musclecar in the slalom, just as fast anywhere else, easier to live with and more practical... all this while giving far better gas mileage.

There is no evolution. It's just the old Challenger & Mustang in new skin. Better off just buying and restoring an old classic.

This is 2008. How about a musclecar that gets 30mpg's? Now that would be interesting.
When gas hits $6/gallon, these dinosaurs will hit the used car lots faster than H2's and Escalades.

OK, I am tired of these idiotic articles. If you are going to compare the Charger SRT8 to the Mustang you should be putting it head to head with a GT500. Last I checked STR8 means it is the top dog, GT500 is the top dog for Mustangs (with the exception of the KR). The Bullitt is an over-glorified GT Mustang. If I am looking at a Charger SRT8 I think I would be a little worried that a Mustang GT with a few mods is breathing down my neck.

The only worse article on here was the time they compared a WRX Subaru to a Mustang Shelby GT. Two completely different cars that really can't compare. Of course the WRX wins, it's smaller, lighter and based on Rally Racing. It better do the slalom faster. When's the last time you saw a Mustang on the WRC circuit? That's for the Ford Focus that only Europe gets to see.

As far as gas mileage my friends with EVO's and WRX's don't get 30 mpg, they barely get 15-16 mpg. Put a turbo on something and rev it high wave the gas bye-bye.

Lastly, the Mustang (and the Charger) are nothing like the old ones. Old Mustangs had crappy tranny's, drum brakes, gutless engines, crappy steering. Have you driven a Mustang GT? Pick up the recent Popular Mechanics and read the stats about how a bone stock GT at around $25K is a second slower than a Porsche Cayman S they tested on the same track.

Let's not even get started on the Horse Power wars that the Germans have going on. It's getting out of control. These cars burn more fuel and put way to much horsepower in the hands of people that don't know how to handle it. The Japanease cars are doing the same. I doubt the Skyline GT-R is getting 30 mpg.

Last but not least one of the cars I own is a Mustang GT, when I drive it I average about 25mpg when I don't rag on it like an idiot. When I do get on it I get about 18mpg. When I got it I had a choice between a 70 and an 07. Let's see: airbags, 4-wheel disc, nice stereo, better acceleration, better tranny, better seats, warranty. The 70 didn't seem so great. I think what people are missing here is that these cars are built for those who love them past, present and future. They are not built to compete with an EVO or WRX, nor for the people that drive those cars. These are all just as different as LeMans, NASCAR, Indy and WRC.

I'll admit up front that I love Mustangs. I like them all, old and new. I'm also impressed by the Challenger and love the styling. But when it comes down to buying a muscle car I still think the Mustang has the best bang for my buck. The Challenger is more expensive, more exclusive, heavier, and with 400hp pulls off slightly better track times. If I poured in that extra 5k into some mods I might be able to pull off some pretty impressive times. But that's only if I'm being performance minded, otherwise I'll settle for a stock GT and save my money (not to mention the extra dough it'll take to fill up at the pump). I still like the Challenger, I'm just waiting for some improvements to be hammered out.

I've got a stock 2005 mustang gt with just a steeda cold air intake and tune.
I consistently get 0-60 times of 5.0 -5.2 and a 1/4 mile of about 13.2 at 107mph.
Other than having 17"wheels and dont understand why mine is faster than most of these tests.

Is premium grade gas mandatory with the steeda cold air intake?

pony_pirate, steeda, bren &several others offer "canned " tunes for mustangs. You can specify 87 89 91 92 94 or higher octane for the tune or tunes. The one which I got from steeda was a 94 and was a little to hot as I can only get 92 octane pump gas here in Oregon. I sent the SCT tuner back to them and they corrected it at no additional charge.
You cant use the steeda cold air intake without a tune as the engine would run lean and go into limp home mode. Read this it's very good:http://www.mustangmonthly.com/featuredvehicles/mump_0512_2005_2006_ford_mus- tang_modifications_ecu_exhaust/index.html

Calling the bullitt an overglorified GT is an ignorant statement. I've owned both a normal GT with mods and the bullitt... the bullitt is in a completely different realm. I do agree that for the price of the challenger... it isn't doing much better than the bullitt.

Don't you think the smaller hemi (375 hp) would be a better test. You people run the most lop sided tests of all.
