Please help me price this classic by sabella

I'm helping a friend sell his 1967 Pontiac Bonneville and we could really use some advice on what it's worth (not just the blue book value). It is a red convertable, but it has several problems. First, the top is ripped and will need to be replaced (the car must be stored where it can't be rained on). Next, the interior was rained in a bit and the carpet will probably need replacing (also one of the seats has a large cut in it). The paint job is ok, but could use some touch ups and it only has a few very small rust spots. The body and all the windows/windshield is in great shape and it runs fine. We had a full documented inspection done on it by Firestone and they said the engine was in great working condition (though the shocks need replacement and the transmission mount is cracked, but not too badly). This is not a one owner car and I'm unsure about the mileage. Please give me your best opinion of what we could sell this for as is. We have washed, detailed, and waxed it and it looks very presentable other than what I noted. I would like to thank anyone who responds to this in advance.

Sounds like a high #4 car (a high "fair" condition) so, without seeing it, I would guess about $6,000; however, my advice would be to run it on eBay and put a very high reserve on it, so that the auction fails to generate a winner---then you can see what people are willing to pay, and then contact the last 2 or 3 people to bid and see if you can get them to come up a little.

Even restored these cars are worth perhaps only $25,000, so you have to be realistic as to what someone will pay for a "fixer-upper". On the other hand, for a couple thousand bucks in fix-ups they could have a fun car to just knock around in and not worry about.

Mr. Shiftright,

Thank you very much for the response and the advice! I think I will try your eBay tactic and see how that goes. Does anyone else have any comments? Additional insight would be most appreciated.

Only that I looked on Ebay, only 2 late '60s Grand Prix convertibles, were very rough, $1000-$2000 or so. So if yours looks good, could get some attention.

That's one potential problem area - rain = rust = repair $$. If you have details about what "a bit" means, put them in the ad, otherwise people will assume the worst.

Thanks to texases for the advice. I was sceptical about putting it on eBay because it just didn't seem like people went there for cars like this, but I think I am going to try it. If anyone else has an opinion of what this is worth, I'm still listening.

Without photos and more info, that's as close as we can get. Opinions need some hard evidence to be based on, and we don't have much to go on here. We don't know if the engine is the correct code, if there's been a color change, or really even how it looks.

Oh eBay is good for selling dreams. It's exactly where your car belongs IMO.

One more thing - make sure you have a good number of sharp photos for Ebay. This means an hour spend in the engine compartment with a bottle of 409 and a roll of paper towels might be time well spent. The only thing a bidder will know is what he reads and sees.

I suggest that you restore the car to its original version. It gonna be worth a lot more. Just use its authentic parts. It will be difficult and costly but the reward is satisfying.
