What makes your friend think the batteries will fail?
She should just drive the car or sell it now.
The performance without the batteries will be horrible when climbing hills, trying to pass another car or entering a freeway.

No, it is not possible. The Prius MUST have the electric power. However, some taxis have gone over 300K without battery failure. Don't mistake the warranty expiring for the battery expiring!
