What is this discussion about? Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, Diesel, Hybrid Cars, SUV

Comparison Test: 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid vs. 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI - Brand prejudice says we're making a big mistake comparing a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid to a 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI. Maybe you're saying this, too. But with a base price of $53,295 for the hybrid Tahoe and $53,775 for the diesel GL, the cost difference is all of $480. (more)

No one's talking about it, but the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI are the two most fuel-efficient full-size SUVs on the market. We guess that makes Paris Hilton, proud owner of a 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid, the hybrid Tahoe's twin, a forward-thinking early adopter at the vanguard of the green car movement.

For me even before I read the article the GL320 was the clear winner. I drove a used one and did not like the way the automatic transmission downshifted when you let off the accelerator pedal. Other than that it was a very good handling luxury SUV. The other down side was it was used and the asking price in the upper $70k range with 12,000 miles. They did sell it so we know that there is a market in CA for the diesels. I looked at another one that a fellow drove from Oregon to sell while on vacation in San Diego. He claimed 27.9 MPG for the entire trip down with much of it over 80 MPH.

This round goes to the Diesel:

Our 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI gets 26 mpg on the highway loop, which is a superb figure for a large SUV but not altogether surprising since the diesel carries a 24-mpg EPA highway estimate.

Harder to explain is the Benz's 22.1-mpg average on the city loop, a clear advantage over the Tahoe.

I'd rather have the Jeep diesel and save money.

Between the GL320 and the Tahoe I'd take the Tahoe.

I have not driven the new Tahoe. If it is no better than the 2007 you can have it. They are no way as solid built as the GL from Mercedes. Not sure if the Tahoe is built in Canada or Mexico. The Mercedes is built in the USA.

I am renting an Equinox as they did not have my Trailblazer for me when I got here. It is a tinny piece of junk. I was a GM buyer from 1988 till 2005. GMC has gone down hill with their PU trucks and SUVs since 1998.

Diesels are a good choice overall. Combining diesel & electric will likely prove to be a real good efficiency solution for the next several years until we can move to all electric or hydrogen cells. These 2 vehicles are good choices, but WAY over priced for what you get. The GL is over the top at $69K. Both need to be priced about $45K to be competitive IMO.

Cost. A diesel engine that meets tier 2 bin 5 costs between $2000 - $4000 more than a gas engine of comparable cost. Add another $4000-$6000 premium for the hybrid system. The economics will never work -- the fuel savings would never add up to the extra initial cost.

BMW, Mercedes and Land Rover are all working on Diesel Hybrid systems as we speak.
