Comparison Test: 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid vs. 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI - Brand prejudice says we're making a big mistake comparing a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid to a 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI. Maybe you're saying this, too. But with a base price of $53,295 for the hybrid Tahoe and $53,775 for the diesel GL, the cost difference is all of $480. (more)

Replying to: moparbad (Apr 21, 2008 3:00 pm) I have not driven the new Tahoe. If it is no better than the 2007 you can have it. They are no way as solid built as the GL from Mercedes. Not sure if the Tahoe is built in Canada or Mexico. The Mercedes is built in the USA. I am renting an Equinox as they did not have my Trailblazer for me when I got here. It is a tinny piece of junk. I was a GM buyer from 1988 till 2005. GMC has gone down hill with their PU trucks and SUVs since 1998.

Combining diesel & electric will likely prove to be a real good efficiency solution for the next several years until we can move to all electric or hydrogen cells. These 2 vehicles are good choices, but WAY over priced for what you get. The GL is over the top at $69K. Both need to be priced about $45K to be competitive IMO.

Replying to: harbir (Apr 21, 2008 3:13 pm) Cost. A diesel engine that meets tier 2 bin 5 costs between $2000 - $4000 more than a gas engine of comparable cost. Add another $4000-$6000 premium for the hybrid system. The economics will never work -- the fuel savings would never add up to the extra initial cost. Replying to: damikco1 (May 27, 2008 10:00 am) $4 per gallon for RUG, $5 per gallon for Diesel. Tahoe Hybrid 20 MPG, GL320 CDI 27 MPG. The diesel holds the edge. If you are buying either for a city car it is a big waste of money. I would go with the Mercedes. Not sure if the insurance difference would be much. My Sequoia is $200 less than my Passat was. Replying to: damikco1 (May 27, 2008 11:40 am) The spike in diesel is because of the switch over to ULSD and the extra long cold winter this year.
