MPG Question by rotary

I have looked at the new Rabbit and have a question for any owners.

What's the real life MPG, both city and highway, for either the auto or manual?

Thanks to anyone who can provide their experience.

I have the 07 manual. In the summer months I'm getting about 28 hwy and 25 city, whereas in the colder months I got about 26 hwy and 24ish city.

Okay, thanks. That helps me a great deal. The mileage isn't as great as I'd have thought, but it's not so bad that it doesn't compensate for the lower price versus what some other cars in the Rabbit's range are getting.

In a 2005 Jetta with the same 2.5 engine and automatic, we averaged 30-32 mpg on a freeway trip at 70-75 mph.

I really don't understand why VW didn't put the 2.0T motor that they put in the Passat. I have a friend that has a 06 Passat with that car, a much bigger, heavier car than the Rabbit, and he gets 25+ in mixed driving, and often gets 30mpg on the highway.

That motor would get great fuel economy in the Rabbit.

Actually there is only a couple hundred pounds difference in weight between Passat annd Rabbit.

Judging by the Jetta Wolfsburg vs. SE price the 2.0T might add about $1000 to the price...that $1000 savings still buys a bit of gas, even at $4+ .

GTI has 2.0T and gets almost the same mpg rating as Rabbit. Per EPA Rabbit is 21/29, GTI 22/29. EPA figures indicate the GTI uses 4% less gas, but premium costs about 4% more so fuel cost is essentially identical.

For comparison, the Passat is rated at 19/28 mpg with the 2.0T. So "city" mpg is actually quite a bit lower than the Rabbit.

"That motor would get great fuel economy in the Rabbit."

As jeffyscott correctly stated, the GTI is simply a Rabbit with the same 2.0T motor found in the Passat.

Jeff & Shipo:

Consumer Reports has, in their hatchback comparo, the City mpg of the Rabbit with the 2.5 liter 16.

I'm not making this up.

It's the one where they compare the Rabbit, Outback, Saturn Astra, Toyota Matrix, etc.

I have got as much as 32 mpg -- all freeway with cruise control at 70 MPH, no AC.
Worst is about 25 with mostly in-town driving. Typically 27-30 MPG mixed.
I don't do rabbit starts & stops, so I don't waste a lot of gas ac/de-accelerating ...
I have been behind or alongside some Jettas and Rabbits and swear that they must be flooring it when the light turns green

Those figures sound encouraging. My son just finished his first tank in his 08 Rabbit 2 Dr. auto. 315 miles and filled 12.9 gal. up to the top of the filler neck. MPG equates to 24.47 with 90% city driving. This weekend he and I will test the HWY. MPG on a trip from Eastern WV to Pittsburgh on the PA Turnpike. We're both curious to see what the Rabbit an accomplish.
