How to Buy a Nissan Skyline GT-R in America -- Right Now - Kaizo is constantly hunting down bodies for remanufacture but, Alison says, it has high standards about what it buys. "They go out and acquire mint cars at auctions," Alison explains, "and they reject many bodies. (more)

The production, sale and importation of vehicle parts (engines, transmissions, chassis, vehicle bodies, etc.) are not regulated by EPA because parts are not considered motor vehicles under the Clean Air Act. However if the parts constitute a disassembled vehicle or an approximate disassembled vehicle, the combination is considered a motor vehicle under the Clean Air Act. Any attempt to use this policy to circumvent the Clean Air Act or the Imports regulations will be considered a violation of the Clean Air Act and will be strictly enforced. An example of such circumvention is: A kit car maker who also provides the engine and transmission before or after production/importation of the body/chassis. 5. "Motor vehicles" must comply with the Clean Air Act and may not be disassembled nor purchased in a disassembled form for the purposes of evading the Clean Air Act or the Imports regulations. In these situations the kit car body/chassis combination must be certified by the manufacturer, must be in a configuration which was previously certified by EPA subject to the guidelines discussed at "2" above or, in the case of an importation, an EPA form 3520-1 must be filed at the port of entry and the vehicle imported by an eligible ICI who must ensure that the kit car body/chassis complies with all applicable emission requirements. At the present time, there are no ICIs eligible to import kit cars. The emissions hurdle could be solved with a lot of time and money, but the last reliable quote I recieved was for $12,000 - $14,000 and that company no longer wanted to deal with the hassles. This still leaves you in violation of paragraph #5 above. Yes, there are many Skyline GTRs in the US but very few are here legally... -AL

Let's be clear. I am not the bummer, the law is the bummer. I am merely stating the facts in an effort to help inform people, that have the money to afford a Skyline GTR, about the legality and risks of pursuing this avenue of ownership. Clearly the poster before you could use a little information on what is legal and what is not (i.e. Federal Law trumphs State law). Happy motoring, AL |

Replying to: emomoh (Apr 19, 2008 4:58 pm) Yes, 100+ Skylines! Some are legal Federally compliant cars imported by Motorex, most are illegal "kit cars", and some are outright scams. Do you know which is which? Not everything that glitters is gold... -AL |
