This is the most important car in Jaguar's history. It's the 2008 Jaguar XF 2.7D — that's "D" as in diesel. And if Jaguar is to survive and prosper in Britain with gasoline prices now reaching $9 per gallon, then this car simply has to succeed.

It would be nice if Jagaur could bring this to the U.S. I like everything about this car except for the front end. It looks like a Buick. The interior does look like class leading and the drive select knob is both functional and cool. I hope that Jaguar can survive the sell to Tata motors. I think the auto world would be a poorer place if yet another British car company went out of business.

It seems easy to understand that if you drive a car that burns 30% less fuel (which is what is reported in the Jag article), but diesel fuel costs 15% more than RUG (which it does around here but which I am sure that the gasser Jag burns PUG), you are still saving money. A rough estimate would be 19.5%. If you assume that the Jag gasser burns PUG, again using the prices here, it's 23%.

Why does only Europe get Diesels? by mymurano

I am tired of the american auto manufactures never offering their diesel and European models here in the states. How about guys why not offer a diesel here. I am waiting for VW and the other European mfgs to offer a diesel in 2009. IF american auto mfgs think they have lost market share now wait until 2009 when these diesels arrive from both Europe and Japan.

I think that we have to put a lot of the blame on the EPA, and especially CARB. I am sure that one of the things keeping the American auto manufactures, as well as the European ones, from offering more diesels in the US is the expense of converting them so that they will pass the EPA/CARB emission standards (which were developed for gassers, and are configured to their emission strengths and weaknesses). At this point, with particulate traps and catalysts, I suspect that standards could be developed for diesels that make just as much sense as the present ones and that diesels could pass (and gassers probably couldn't, especially if one of the controlled emissions was CO2). But the EPA and CARB show no signs of doing that, so any diesel has to be modified to meet EPA/CARB standards before it can be sold in the US.

Biodiesel is far easier to find in CA than E85 ethanol. I know that So Dakota has had biodiesel B20 in the Brookings area for at least 8 years. Hawaii has had it for several years. It has certain limitations that would not be good in cold country in the B100 form. Californians could be using biodiesel in cars saving millions of gallons of fossil fuel per year if not for a repressive regulatory agency in Sacramento.
