2009 Challenger SRT8 and 1970 Challenger R/T Hemi 426 by jfstill

This morning on my morning commute I saw an Orange 1970(?) R/T Hemi (black shaker hood) Challenger and the yet to be introduced SRT 8/ 6.1 liter Challenger on the road together. The SRT 8 had the blacked out rear tail, small blacked out fin on the back with SRT8 logo, a silver car with Black stripes over the hood. Also had the raised hood with 6.1 designation. Looks to be a photo shoot or comparison test. Vey cool to see the old and new!

That is really cool! I have seen pictures like that, it would be awesome to see it in person though. I like seeing the two next to each other because the 2008/2009 models still have that classic but retro look. It is a great looking car.

Does anyone think it's rather stupid and irresponsible for Edmunds to get a ticket for speeding in excess of 100mph on the way to Willow Springs?

I just saw the test results on the SE. 0-60 in over 8 seconds. I just hope my grandmother doesn't go Challenger hunting in her Camry. She does have a mean streak.

Well, Camry is the official car of grandparents.

0-60 mph in 8.1 seconds is just fine. For those who want to go faster all they need to do is spend more $$ for RT or SRT Challenger.

Did you all see the Performance tests of all three 2009 Challengers here: SE V6 4A,
 R/T 6M, and SRT8 6M?

Yes I saw the tests for the R/T and the SRT. Unfortunately Dodge is not looking at those models being the big sellers due to current gas prices.

The new Challenger is just too heavy to be fitted with this 6 cyl. I really do like this car and it will be a shame to see the majority of them being an easy target for every kid with a halfway hot import, or his mom's Camry or Accord. Even the R/T and the SRT perform barely well enough to compete with Mazdaspeed 3's, Chevy Cobalt SS's, etc. Let's not even talk about the Mitsubishi Evo and and Subaru WRX STI which are in the Challenger's price category. If Toyota can get a 6.1 0-60 time out of my Grandmother's Camry, or the Chevy Malibu with a 6 second flat 0-60, why couldn't Dodge at least give the Challenger SE a little dignity?

Don't get me wrong. I am no fan of those little 4 banger performance cars. I have owned a few over the years. They were quick, ran forever without a problem, and got good gas mileage, but lacked that certain something that said it was a "Man Car". I really think Dodge did a nice job on the body without making it look like a cartoon of the original, like Chevy has done with the upcoming Camaro. But as it is, the Challenger is a good choice for an old man who owned one back in the 70's and want's to relive his youth, not someone looking for a serious performance car.
Mostly I guess I am a little pissed off. I can remember watching Challenger's and Cuda's selling for $100,000 on Barret Jackson and thinking to myself "Wouldn't it be great if these cars could be created again with today's technology?". Well they have. With gas costing what it is, I want one that gets good gas mileage, and won't get me laughed at by every punk who wants to chirp his tires at a stoplight.

Damn shame!
