I myself on a mazdaspeed 3, so I might be alittle baised in this reply. Sure the new cobalt might be quick, by about a 1/10th. Braking the mazda wins, handling maybe alittle nudge to the mazda or about even. Basically when it comes down to it, its all going to be driver. Im sure once mods start hitting the stores, then it will become a battle of which car makes greater gains. Personally for me, I wanted a good daily, with plenty of room, and a nice interior. The mazda has that, the cobalt isnt a bad car, its just well the same model as before with a turbo. As for the lap times on the ring, it was done with no traffic, and a seasoned driver, where as the mazdas ring time was done with a amaetur driver, and traffic. Again its all going to be driver skill. Espically with a price tag equal to the mazda, your paying for slightly faster older cobalt.

The new SS turbo has 3.82 final gears,it also comes standred with the low spoiler and the tall wing can be added for around $250.00,you can no longer get any leather seats on the SS turbo.I am 45 yrs old and I own a 2007 SS Super Charged and I love it,I am thinking about selling my 07 and order the new 2008 SS turbo.

The Mazda3 isn't a bad car no doubt and probably the most stylish in the compact class. The Cobalt has some other features including that transmission launch system which along with the HHR is the first production drag racing clutch unit installed in a car. The one or two tests I read had a larger gap in the 1/4 performance.

The Cobalt is within 2-years for a restyling but the current coupe still is descent looking.

I dont know why you say the new 08 Cobalt SS is the same car only with a turbo, everything I have read about the new one is not the same only with a turbo, the new one has brembo brakes on it and they are also bigger then the old SS brakes, also all the suspesion is new and bigger, bigger sway bars,GM finally listen to the buyers and they have taken care of all the things that where wrong with the old SS.The thing I want to know is why did they go to a turbo?what was wrong with the super charger on the old SS?was it that they did not know how to set it up or something else? Now I know people like turbos and they say a turbo is free horse power no belt to make it work. I like what I have read and have been told about the new SS that I think I will sell my 2007 ss super chagred or just trade it in and get the new SS turbo.

Granted, I don't think the SS is the hottest looking car around, but it will attract less police attention, especially if it doesn't have the rear wing. I don't mind the looks myself, but what I don't understand is that they compare it to the Mazdaspeed 3 and then complain about the looks. I am impressed with the Mazdaspeed 3's performance, but in my opinion it is down right ugly! Don't get me wrong, I have a great deal of respect for the car, but I would rather be seen driving the SS or the Mazda 6 sedan which I think looks great.

The SS sounds like a great car with some fun performance features. What really amazes me is that it sounds like you are encouraged to beat the hell out of it and they cover the problems under warranty!

This car sounds amazing! I am a little surprised by the fact that it doesn't get the attention it deserves. I was totally unaware of it's existence until this morning when I was looking through Road and Track magazine's road test summary. When you read through car magazines about performance cars at this price point, all you ever read about is the Mazdaspeed 3, the Subaru WRX, and the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart.

In R&T's tests it was .7 seconds faster to 60 than the Mazdaspeed 3, and a full 4.9 mph faster through their slalom course. That time through their slalom course is actually faster than the score recorded by an 08 Porsche 911 turbo. A previous poster cited that the gap was closer and the Mazda was driven by a half wit. Makes me wonder if all Mazdaspeed 3's might be driven by half wits. This magazine's testing also had the SS getting 2 mpg better and a couple thousand lower on the as tested price.

Right now I am in the market for an inexpensive economy car that still has some get up and go. I will test drive this car this week. It will have to be really ugly inside and out to get it out of my head that it is the better choice.

I will be picking up my 2009 4-door Cobalt SS tomorrow - I don't really care how it looks. Awesome gas mileage and 0-60 in less that 6 seconds for less than 25K - What a no brainer.

I'm curious why Edmunds stated that 260HP 2 liter intercooled turbo was introduced by Chevy HHR SS. Surely they know better. That engine was introduced by Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Red Line almost a full year earlier.

Not that it matters any, but I have been noticing that since initial reviews of those two roadsters, they have been mentioned precious little by any motorsport magazines. It's almost like, "if you can't say anything bad, don't say anything at all"

But I am not comparing Solstice/Sky to Cobalt SS. If you need more room, by all means buy the Cobalt, and if that is not enough, buy an SUV. But performance wise, Solstice/Sky are right up there, in 350Z, S2000, Boxster and Cayman category.
