Full Test: 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Coupe - Bottom Line: The 2008 Cobalt SS is the best front-drive car Chevrolet has ever built. But its dated packaging will keep most of you from trying it. (more)

We come to our first serious corner on Glendora Mountain Road, and the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Coupe delivers the unexpected. It turns into a tight left-hander with the haste and hunger of an import sport compact. Perhaps most surprising of all, it gives the impression of being happy to do it. I have always been a fan of the body style, minus the wing. now it has stepped up the sport compact competition, just hope it can hold its own against Mazda....anyone know what the gearing is like? RPM's on the highway 60-70 mph?

Replying to: fastwhiteguy09 (Mar 27, 2008 8:30 pm) "Faster Than a Mazdaspeed 3 The 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS uses up just 5.8 seconds accelerating to 60 mph, and it goes through the quarter-mile in 14 seconds flat at 103.6 mph. This is a night-and-day improvement over the supercharged Cobalt SS, which couldn't break 7 seconds for 60 mph and ran a 15.2-second quarter at 95.6 mph. In fact, the '08 Cobalt SS is, for the moment, the quickest car you can buy under $25,000. Even the Mazdaspeed 3 can't keep pace with this Cobalt, as it posts a quarter-mile of 14.2 seconds at 100.1 mph and 14.5 at 98.7 mph. The Chevy's main advantage is that it weighs 200 pounds less. Also, you can upshift in the SS without lifting." Emphasis Added |

Isn't the performance upgrades (which are awesome!) Its whether or not they used this opportunity to improve the quality of the car. Have they been able to fix the problems with the earlier models? See, they made it more exiting to lure people to dealerships. Now if people give it a second chance, GM is going to have to improve quality or else the Cobalt may suffer the cavalier's fate Also, let me just add that I don't understand why some mags don't like the looks of this car, especially with those big wheels it looks nice to me. |

i also noticed that edmunds acheived 27 mpg....thats pretty intense when you realize your doing 0-60 in 5.8... if you are a reader of consumer reports, take a look at the reliability of the cobalt over the recent years, its getting better, hopefully this one is no exception |

Back in the days when buying the fastest car for the least amount of money appealed to me I would have bought the Cobalt SS. It is the best performance value since the original Neon SRT4. The complaints about the appearance to me are the next best advantage after the performance and the price. The car is a SLEEPER. Cars like the EVO or STI look like they are speeding when they are standing still. You can probably speed past a trooper and they wouldn't even think it was you! I wouldn't get the wing and I would probably consider removing all of the external SS stuff. If you wait till the end of the year you can probably get it way below invoice too. This would probably help to offset the depreciation; and if you hold on to it long enough it may even become a collectors item. With all the money you save from not having to buy a bunch of go fast stuff you can spice up the interior with things like custom leather seats, or a good aftermarket audio system with DVD/NAV and bluetooth. Too alleviate reliability fears I would just get GM's extended warranty. I wouldn't car about it being a Chevy "Cavalier/Cobalt". I would just be laughing all the way to the bank and smiling as I blew past the competitors in their slower more expensive cars that are more likely to be stolen. |
