Comparison Test: 2008 BMW M3 Coupe vs. 2008 Audi S5 Coupe
- Were we foolish to pair these two high-performance coupes? The test numbers recorded by our previous 2008 Audi S5 were no fluke, as this time around we managed to coax another tenth or two from the car from Ingolstadt, validating our instincts. (more)

Our first full test of the $53,000, all-wheel-drive 2008 Audi S5 was a bit of a revelation. With a 354-horsepower version of Audi's direct-injection 4.2-liter V8 under its hood, the voluptuous Audi S5 ran a 13.3-second quarter-mile at 104 mph, just 0.1 second and 2 mph shy of the 420-hp 2007 Audi RS4 sedan. What's more, the S5's slalom speed is within a couple mph of the harsh-riding RS-spec sedan. "It ran a 13.3? With that kind of speed, who needs a $67,000 RS4?" we asked ourselves.

S5? RS5! by jmaroun

The S5 was designed to beat the 335i, not the M3.
Audi failed since the 335i is simpler, lighter, more nimble, better fuel economy, and is $10k cheaper.

This is what Audi has in store for the E92 M3 Coupe!

I think the comparison and the article was quite appropriate. The article made a point of saying the comparison was a bit unfair, but putting the S5 in the M3's Class was a compliment to the Audi.

When you start getting up into the performance numbers on cars like this and pricing the lines start getting very blurred. Without a stopwatch, most people would be hard pressed to tell which is the faster car and would often pick the car with the "rougher" ride as being the sportiest. The RS5 will be a monster, but will Audi be able to bring it to the US market at a price that will rival the M3 sub 70K sticker? I sure hope so, but the base price for a M3 and S5 are not that far apart. RS5 will certainly be a more expensive car than the M3.

only comparison was that they both have a v8 and... well thats were the comparison ends... the S5 should be compared more to a 135i a 335i or maybe even a g37

The S5 is 3 inches wider from the center of the front wheels than a 3 series. It's 1 inch wider than a 6 series coupe. The S5 makes the 80k 6 series coupe look really bad. Why anybody would want to pay 80k for a 6 series for that car vs 60k for a fully loaded S5 is beyond me.

Go park a 3 series next to an S5 and you'll see what I'm talking about. The S5 makes a 3 series coupe look downright boring..and small. The S5 is one of the sexiest cars out there under 100,000.

The S5 is part of the new platform for Audi's and it's not nearly as heavy feeling as the older generation Audi's. It's 60/40 biased to the rear wheels, very fluid, amazing shifter and creamy smooth. For an AWD car, it's incredibly fast with "only" 354hp.

You're pretty brilliant w/ your 1 sentance blog about Audi. I'll look eleswhere for thoughtful conversation and discussion.

You are so right. I have driven both in the last couple of weeks and I bought the S5. All-weather performance aside, The dry traction performance was just as good and more compliant over bumps and way better looking.

This is referenced in both the story and the video comparison(S5 vs. M3). I cannot find how or where to control this on my car. Can anyone help? Is this a European only feature?

I believe the author doesn't seem to know cars {at least these} very well. And the editor let it slide. Shame on both for representing themselves as experts as any autofan realizes these are two different class vehicles. Lets give the heavier car less power and a more supple suspension then test them as equals athletically. I guess it is who you know and not what you know that gets you the job. Computer reporting at its best. Would Johnny like to be the president next ? LOL Both are extremely good at doing what they do best but neither can replicate the others best traits. Wow I did it in one sentence. Waste of an article Edmunds .

Audi A/S/RS-5 vs. BMW 328/335/M3 coupes by dhsieh9

Somehow when I compare the entire Audi A/S/RS-5 line vs. BMW 328/335/M3 coupes, I get the distinct feeling that Audi simply didn't want their perspective buyers to make a direct model-to-model comparison against the Bimmer. For example, the A4 is slotted between 328 & 335. The same goes for S5 & RS5 with RS5 topping out M3 spec-wise. I think this is simply a marketing decision so that Audi's new A5 line will not end up with embarrassment competing a dominant industry leader.
