Hi, my friend was in an accident while at the wheel of a Mazda5. Even though she was traveling 45 mph the driver's side airbag did not deploy. Any word about airbag issues on the Mazda5? Thanks.

Haven't heard of any. What type of collision and which bag didn't deploy (steering wheel, side or curtain)?

She rear ended someone...and none of the bags deployed.

She was going 45 at the time of impact while the other car was stopped? I hope she's ok.
 
If that is the case, the airbag module in that car holds the key. It works like a flight data recorder and records the conditions at impact (any condition of very rapid deceleration.). I'm sure the insurance company will look at it and determine if anything was faulty, but that's really an area for very well paid engineers and not edmunds speculators like myself.

I've seen several Mazda5s on pics when involved in an accident (knocking on wood), and the airbags have been deployed. I agree, possibly under one weird condition (or fault) they did not come up but it does not seem a general issue as far as I know...
