The TL is bigger inside than the RL??? Then again I do remember th RL being kind of cramped inside from about three years ago when I cross shopped it before getting the 2007 ES350. But I had thouught they extensively redesigned the RL since then.

Infinity M is a great car and I might well end up getting it. I'm not in love with the exterior but the interior is simply gorgeous.

I'd be all over the Genesis except for the fact that it's RWD only and I live in NY where we get a lot of snow. So I'm limiting my search to AWD or FWD vehicles.

XF is a nice enough looking car but it's priced thru the roof and it's reliability is a question mark (it is a Jag, after all...lol).

The M-B E-Series is priced way high but M-B seems to have a pattern of offering really deep discounts on both purchases and leases. This will especially be the case as they attempt to liquidate inventory to make way for the "new" E-Class due out in Aug. (I'll be ending my ES350 lease in June). So I think the outgoing E-Class may be an especially great deal around then. That and I despise the photos I've seen of the new E-Class (looks like a C-Class on steroids).

The Audi A6 is of great interest to me. Now with the supercharged 3.0 engine it rectifies the anemic performance of the former naturally aspirated "3.2" (it was actually a 3.1 liter engine BTW). Problem is that Audi wisely had made it's reputation in the past by undercutting its German rivals by about $5-7k on the same class of car. That no longer seems to be the case and they may be pricing themselves right out of the market. Too bad because the Audi's are great looking cars both on the exterior and especially on their class leading interiors.

draz I am curious as to why not stick with Lexus, did you not like the ES you now drive or are you simply looking to break away from the brand?
Have you considered the Pontiac G8, above the Malibu and Impala, more power, great reviews.
I am sure that a good close look and test drive of the Caddy CTS and your wife will certainly realize it is not the blue hair vehicle of years ago. Have you seen the commercials with Kate Walsh in one of those, SMOKIN HOT!!! Recent Motor Trend articles have placed the CTS-V above the M5, yes above the M5....Good Luck!!

Traction in snow? by carnut39

I am interested in purchasing a 2009 Maxima and have read all the technical information available. I do a lot of driving on hills in snow and ice in Maine and my Lexus E330 is O.K. but not great. The all wheel drive Audi I owned previously was much better in this respect, but not in reliability.

The literature on the Maxima notes that it has traction control, which aparently only reduces the throttle when slippage occurs. However, it does not seem to have a limited slip differential which I have always thought the best way to eliminate getting stuck in the snow.

I would appreciate hearing from folks who have had experience with driving in snow and ice in the '09 Maxima. I love all the other features of the car.

The car is equipped with wide performance tires. Not the best in snow but great for dry road slaloms. Snow tires are available but if you want better winter performance check out the awd murano. Otherwise keep an old jeep in the driveway to use between Dec and March.

2009 Maxima - 6 month report card by go_mdx1

I’ve had my 2009 Maxima for 6 months now and nearly 5000 miles. I’m very happy with my car purchase!! Still, 0 defects. As I’ve stated before, its 60% luxury and 40% sport which is just the right amount of luxury/sport that I was looking for. While I personally like the looks of this vehicle, the 09 Acura TL seems to be drawing more attention (at least that was the case at an International Auto Show I attended last week).

StrengthsThe ride and drive is a perfect blend of luxury and performance. 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 secs, yet a nice comfortable ride on the highway.
- Really enjoy the heated steering wheel during the winter months.
- Very little road noise at highway speeds. Check out the sound insulation in the wheel wells!
- Highly recommend the Premium Package (dual moon roofs, air conditioned seat, rearview camera, rear seat ac/radio controls, power sunscreen). This option package sets it apart from its competitors such as Accord, TL and G35.
- Air conditioning is extremely strong – this has always been a strong suit of Nissan’s. Lexus/Acura “low flow” air conditioning are a step back in my opinion
- iPod integration is the “best in the business” according to most car reviews.
- HID lights offer perfect light projection on the horizontal and vertical .
- Maxima does an excellent job on the “little touches” which can get overlooked:
o Door lights are curved 90 degrees at the bottom of the door - doubling as puddle lamps.
o Sun visor extensions are provided.
o Video cable outputs allow you to watch movies on the NAV screen.
o Extremely large glove box.
o Extra large cup/map holders on the front side doors.
o 2009 Quick Reference Guide is great! 30 pages and you know everything you need to know about your car.

Weaknesses- My biggest complaint is around the trunk (and its been a fairly common complaint area). While the trunk is fairly large (14.2 cu ft.), the trunk opening is small! Also, for such a small trunk, its very hard to close!!
- At first, I didn’t like the Bose Radio has two subwoofers in the rear which gives an extremely strong base sound! Over time, the radio has grown on me.
- Braking power is not as strong as the competitors.
- Zig-zag oil dipstick from the Generation 4 Maxima is still there!
- Tire Pressure Monitors should show air pressure for each tire – like on the Infiniti

Gas Mileage- I’ve been getting 21 mpg mostly city and 28 mpg pure highway. Overall, I’d say the gas mileage is very close to the EPA ratings.

Defects NONE TO DATE

2009 Maxima Winter Rims by TAO5

I need to buy a set of winter rims for my 09 Maxima. How critical is the +50mm offset? Can I safely use rims with less than +50mm?

Thanks for your report card, mdx. My wife is leaning strongly towards the Maxima as her next car. It is good to hear from actual owners.

Only 2 things to add to the list of weaknesses for the Maxima:
1- The smell of glue and plastic when one enters the vehicle, even with leather appointed seating (whatever that means). I still can't figure out what is leather and what is not on the Maxima seats, certainly by the overpowering smell of glue and plastic, not much is leather at all. Not very premium like in a car this price. By contrast, opening the cabin door on an Acura TL definitely gives off the scent of leather. The auto show in this area supports your claim that there is a bigger buzz for the TL, the cars were impossible to sit in compared to the Maxima. Around the DC area you can see TLs allover the place, Maximas are a rare sighting.
2- The similarity of the trunk design to the Altima is my other turn-off. Although the tail lights are certainly different than the Altima, the trunk like just can't quite separate itself from it.

I would add the fact that the car is built in America, at a significant cost advantage to the big 3, and priced as a import. $39,000.00 is quite a bit for a fully loaded vehicle of its type built right here in the USA. Nissan has no need to apply for a bail out. Nissan laughs all the way to the bank when someone signs up for one of these cars at such prices. American cost + Sale at import price = Easy profit. But I am sure everyone who reads this blog already knows that.

Just topped 21,100 enjoyable, trouble-free miles here. As I'm still 4 months away from hitting my 1-year mark with this car, that's a lot of time in the seat over the past 8 months.

I've done all of my scheduled maintenance (more oil changes than anyone should do in a year), and my car has been 100% trouble-free. Even my tires have maintained a surprising amount of tread! These tires tend to wear relatively quickly, but mine have plenty of life left in them right now.

I do enjoy everything that my car is, but my one regret is regarding what my car is not. Specifically, I purchased the SV w/ tech package. At the time, it was my only option, but I wish I had held out for the premium package, as the features that I'm missing, but that are included in that package, would really make this car hard to beat. Being in AZ, for example, I'd love to have the air-conditioned seats.

Other than regretting not picking up that specific package, I've not experienced any buyer's remorse regarding this car. It's proving to be everything I had expected it to be when I purchased it.
