I'll agree with bigmclargehuge here. THere's no reason why Porsche charges the prices they do for their cars. One automotive journalist theorized the reason Porsche charges their exorbanant prices is because the customer can order a small key bag color coordinated with the paint of his car.

A Boxter, for example, isn't any better than the S2000 or Sky RedLine, yet it costs about the same as a Vette. I don't see how a German econo-box can cost as much as a Corvette, but it does...

Let's hope this new GT-R will aid in the overall price reductions of overly expensive European sports cars. And let's face it: Price a Carrera the same price as a Corvette and it's no longer an exotic. Same car, different price tag, reduction in status.
This is a sad but true fact and once again illustrates that the wealthiest people in our society are also the dumbest.

"Front-midship" specifically means a conventional front-engine rear-drive car where the engine is located entirely behind the centerline between the front wheels. The Corvette, S2000, G35, 350Z, and the current GT-R (but not the older ones) are front midship designs. That helps with a 50-50 weight balance, and more importantly it reduces the polar moment of the car as it turns.

Nissan calls their new platform FM, for Front Midship. The name is a trademark, even though the design is used widely. The term you are looking for is "Front-mid-engine-rear-wheel-drive" or FMR layout. Which includes the BMW Z-4. With an I-6 up front as it were. And the 3-series all have a 50-50 weight balance. I'm aware of its advantages.

I'll drink to that! There's no reason why good performing cars have to be 'exclusive'.

I honestly don't care if its the lightweight Corvette or the AWD GT-R that's slightly faster. I'm sure we'd agree that there is probably a scenario in which one/other shines.

They are here to prove that performance can be affordable.

A V6 is always inherently better in design than an I6. More compact, smoother, better COG.

Wow, that's just completely wrong.

Sorry, the Z4 doesn't qualify.

Actually it does. Look at what cars share the layout with the Z-4.

I agree that the boxster is no better than the S2000, but i sincerely hope that you have driven a 911 for an extended period of time. It is worth the extra money.

Hey come on now...While wealthy people can certainly exhibit incredibly idiotic traits, I do not think that equating their intelligence to the type of car they choose to drive is a fair assessment of intellect. I believe that Warren Buffet drives an old ford crown victoria....And i can assure you that he is not stupid. It comes down to what you personally want in a car, even if better performance can be found elsewhere...

(GT-R Chief Engineer Kazutoshi) Mizuno suggested the GT-R could get anywhere from 7:44 on up (at the Ring), with most laps coming in between 7:55 and 7:58. So he suggested the GT-R’s strong suit was that it offered “the best cost per lap time.”

Early expert reports were that the GT-R could do it in 7:15, showing how reliable the experts are during the hype period before a car's introduction. Of course now there is the video showing 7:38, which is very impressive. However, until someone takes a stock U.S. production model GT-R and tests it against the competition under the same conditions, all this talk of the GT-R of being the new king is just speculation. As for the videos already posted, I am not convinced the YouTube scientists are meticulously prepared and unbiased in their testing.

I did some looking around and it seems that front-midship specifically refers to having the entire engine behind the front wheels, not just its center of gravity. Nissan popularized the term with the FM platform, but I don't think they created it. A subtle point, perhaps, but one worth making.

Perhaps, but I think it is limited to only a handful of cars, namely the Nissan FM platform and the Mazda RX-8.
