I am an Air Force member stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. I bought this US spec XC90 from the original owner on 30 Oct 07 who was also stationed here. The XC90 was purchased in the States. The original owner had the transmission replaced in Germany at ~64,000 miles. The 2nd transmission just failed after 33,000 miles and 2.5 years. The German Volvo dealer quoted me ~ 4,500 euro to replace it, which is $6,452 at the exchange rate.

I called Volvo of North America Customer Care. The lady told me they couldn't help since the vehicle was overseas, and that Volvo of Europe couldn't help since it was a US spec vehicle. She said to have it repaired and send them the bill with all other documentation and "they" would review it on a case-by-case basis. I asked if they could assist me with contacting Volvo headquarters in Sweden, and she said "they" didn't talk with them. Completely unsympathetic.

You know the rock and a hard place? I feel like I'm in it with no one to help.

Happy holidays to everyone,

Rob

Hi Rob,

I can only tell you what I did here in the States and you can make a decision/or do some research and see if there are corresponding type folks in Germany.

1. File a complaint on line with Volvo
2. File a complaint with the NTSB online
3. File a complaint with the Attorney General
4. File a complaint with Consumer Protection

These worked for myself and approximately 11 others of us. For items 3 and 4, I'd check and see who in your city/state/etc would be similar.
And keep complaining, unfortunately, as with anything in our lives, the more you complain, the more things get addressed.
Good luck, I'll wish you the best, and please let me know if I can be of more help.
Take care.

Purchased my 2004 XC90 T6 in Oct-2009. Today I began accelerating and all of a sudden there was no power. It is definitely the transmission. It doesnt seem to shift up and is extremely sluggish. I put it into Reverse and nothing. Also, after re-starting, it surged forward even though it was in Park. While still in Park, I reved up engine and it lunged forward slightly. Really weird. I am in Beaverton OR, near Portland. Please advise.

I'm in Camas and have a GREAT Volvo guy, but if you want to file a claim, you need to go to a dealership. I'm interested to hear what happens- good luck!

#469 of 900 Volvo Australia contact please ? by westozxc

G'day from WA!

Yesterday (NYE) the wife's 2004 XC90's transmission gave up the ghost and on her first call to Barbagello Volvo they said it was likely it would require a new box - $8000 and a two week wait. Pretty severe over the phone diagnosis for a problem that doesn't exist.

Could xc90volvomum or agitlits post details of their contact within Volvo Australia to start talking about getting some "good will" assistance with the repair. I'm not expecting to pay nothing but there does appear to be a case to be answered.

Disappointed - I work away and reliability was a big factor in buying a Volvo for a family car.

Thanks, Marty.

Hello Marty,

I'm really sorry to hear about your problem. I haven't had the same one with my XC90 T6 yet, but probably is only a matter of time!

I am so paranoid about this problem that I emailed Volvo Australia in advance to see what I should do *if* the problem should occur with my car. Anyway, I just emailed general Volvo customer hotline which was ownersvolvo-customers.com.

I can forward to you their exact response, if you like. Just drop me a line at agitlitsgmail.com

Their response was that each "Good Will" assistance case is considered on a case-by-case basis. This, I presume, means the service history of your vehicle, etc. However, the response was in August 25 and I suspect that they may have become more lenient since there is now a pending class action in the USA regarding this exact matter.

What I would do first if I were you is to lodge case with Volvo Australia and then they will tell you to take the vehicle to the dealership for proper diagnosis. I suspect there will be at least partial assistence from Volvo Australia.

Please email me if you want the exact response and also to talk about it.

Please, also let me know how you go as I am really interested in the outcome.

Best wishes,

Alex

Glad to hear about your miracle. My 2004 XC90 T6 transmission just failed (I assume) on Thursday. I have not contacted anyone yet over this long holiday weekend. I am in the Portland OR area. After reading this website, I assume that I should contact the nearest Volve dealer for help first.

#472 of 900 Transmission going out by jimxc90

My 2003 XC90 T6 has started to skip like the transmission is slipping when I accelerate is this a sign the transmission is starting to go out?

Hi jimxc90,

Sounds like it. Did the Service transmission light come on?

I too have begun to experience transmission issues - 2004, XC-90 T-6 AWD with 86,000 miles - while the car accelerates and appears to go through the gears, it presents a loud "racing sound" that gives the impression it is still in a lower gear - as if you were in second gear but still traveling at 60 mph.
Can any one share experiences with pursuing this with the dealer and what was most successful...Thanks so much,
Mike
