I sent a complaint to Volvo before the car arrived at the dealer.. "I purchased this vehicle from Riverside Ford in Sumner, WA on 1/14/09 and have always been impressed with Volvo. On 1/23/09  6pm, the vehicle warning light in the dash came on with a warning message that said "Transmission Service Urgent" I contacted Riverside Ford, and had them bring it in for warrantee service, and they are bringing it to Volvo of Fife, WA for diagnosis. meanwhile after searching the internet for possible answers I discovered this is a common problem and that a design flaw has been identified throu ATRA (Founded in 1954, the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association ATRA is an international trade association for the professional automatic transmission repair industry.) and that this is a reocurring problem in the 4T65E transmission of the 04 - 05 models. I assume this is something Volvo is aware of, and I need to know wwhat steps I can take to ensure the update '06 4T65E transmission gets placed in my vehicle. As well as what Volvo is prepared to do to cover and ensure this happens at no cost to the consumer (me). is this not something that needs to be officially recalled? I plan on organizing all past and current owners of this vehicle to look into filing a Class Action Lawsuit as soon as possible, and would like to have the cooperation of Volvo in issuing an official Recall of this product, before futher action needs to be taken. Thank you " And got this response: "Thank you for contacting Volvo. We are sorry to learn of the difficulty you have experienced with your 2005 XC90. We are currently looking into this issue with our colleagues at Volvo of Tacoma. We will be back in touch with you as soon as our research is completed. Sincerely, Bill Volvo Cars of North America" Today I contacted Volvo in Tacoma, they verified that the thing needs a new transmission, and are "Waiting for word from Volvo." I also purchased an extended warrantee, I assume if Volvo isnt going to do anything about it that the warrantee will cover it, my concern is how long will it last? Comments?

We bought the XC90 because of the Volvo "For Life" recommendation, but this is my first and last experience with Volvo. As soon as I fix the thing it is sold, even at a loss. Don't buy XC90s.

Replying to: jacostello (Jan 01, 2009 8:42 pm) Back when this happened the first time, the service rep told me with out being real direct about it that the only way anything would get done about this wide-spead problem, which I call a "design flaw", is for the NHTSA to get involved because it can be identified as a SAFETY problem. So I filed the complaint on 10 May 08 and haven't heard anything yet. I'm thinkin' that my car loosing power on I-95 at 65mph could be called a SAFETY issue. That's all for now until I go back into the fray with Volvo. But bottom line is, I'm getting rid of this money trap and going back to Japanese like I should have done in the first place. I got this car when returning from an overseas military assignment thinking this was a good deal..ha! Signed- "Overseas Military Foreign Car Sales Sucker"

My 2004 XC90 AWD T6 's transmission just went down the tubes. When the mechanic looked at it, the inside was smoking and there was a chunk of metal. I just went through my maintenance and repair receipts (many!!) and found what I remembered. I had gone in, when my car was still under warranty and told them of a crunching sound that sounded like it might be under the driver's seat. They found NOTHING. Anyway, Im so upset. I like all of you bought this car new hoping for Volvo for Life and the best safety. I've gotten none of that. I just called my Volvo dealer, but I have to call during the week to talk to the manager. We'll see. I'll keep you posted. I want to get rid of the car. One difference with mine. No warning light to tell me something bad was happening!! |

After reading many threads detailing what a ticking timebomb our 2004 XC90 T6 AWD was, we were fortunate to be able to trade it in for a 2007 XC90 3.2. I thought I could start relaxing and finally get potentially expensive exploding trannies out of my head, but Mom called yesterday and her Acura is in the shop. Imagine my surprise to find out that while Volvo has the T6 nightmare trannies, Acura/Honda have a whole SLEW of bad trannies that span many models over several years. These owners finally went the route of class-action lawsuit. Here is the link, with the hope that a) you will see that not only Volvo uses bad trannies, but b) sometimes owners are made whole by the class-action suit process. Also, maybe the same firm could be retained or at least consulted with, who knows? (Disclaimer: as mentioned, I don't have a T6 anymore, nor do I have any connection to this firm...) I just want to cry after reading all of these postings!! I just bought my used 2003 XC90 T6 with 62,500 miles on December 7, 2008. Well as I was driving to work yesterday(2/2/09) without a warning, the transmission went out. THANK GOD I was not on the freeway yet, just a few seconds before getting on. I am so sad and disgusted with not only my dealership which is ELK GROVE PONTIAC BUICK GMC but with the stupid extended warranty company and Volvo for selling such pieces of junk! I am hoping the the warranty will cover the new transmission but at this point since no one seems to want to help, I am not expecting much. I live in Stockton, CA and would like to know if there are other people close to me that have had this problem happen to them so we can try to get a CLASS ACTION SUIT going. PLEASE PLEASE BELIEVE ME THAT I AM NOT "SUE" HAPPY BUT THIS IS RIDICULOUS! if Volvo refuses to see all of this evidence plus the hundreds more that I have found online about FAULTY VOLVO TRANSMISSIONS, then something HAS TO BE DONE! whether it be me starting a petition to file a class action suit or something to let Volvo know that they MUST take responsibility for what they sell. PLEASE IF YOU HAVE ALREADY STARTED A CLASS ACTION SUIT IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA OR CALIFORNIA PERIOD, CONTACT ME I WANT TO BE INCLUDED. My XC90 is being held hostage by the Volvo dealership in town because they say they are waiting for the "ok" from the extended warranty company in order for them to even touch the car. Then as if being left with one car wasn't bad enough, we can't even get a loaner from them because again, the warranty company has to give the "ok".. mean while I am begging for rides to work and my kids are suffering going to school sometimes late or being picked up late because my husband and I are trying to plan schedules around having just one car.. goodness this is just not right! VOLVO SHAME ON YOU!!! before I forget, what is the deal with the Attorney General? I've seen in some blogs that it's good to contact their office.. may I ask for what? shoot I am looking for a good attorney as it is but I am willing to do whatever it takes to get my $20,000 worth of a car(hopefully something other than a VOLVO)! Heartbroken and furious!
