I posted a few weeks ago about our 04XC90 transmission failure at 70,000+ miles. After calling NJ and the local dealer Volvo and the dealer agreed to pay all but $200 of the cost to replace the transmission and the cooling system--which is required when there is a transmission failure. However, the problems with the electronics/computer system remain. This problem was brought to their attention when the vehicle had less than 5,000 miles on it--three different service managers have attempted to fix it and all three have been unsuccessful. Each has worked extensively with the factory and said frankly that they have no idea how in can be repaired. They are also refusing to spend anymore time on it--despite their warranty obligations because they a) paid for the new transmission and b) don't know what to do aside from replace all of the control cluster and computer network.

Ford and volvo should be stepping up to make all 04 XC90 owners whole. These are expensive cars that are nothing but unlimited maintenance liabilities. Volvo for Life..???? The 04 XC90 does not even last the life of its payments!

ya... had to replace my 03XC90 tranny TWICE at like 60 000 something mi (reverse died) and than once more 5k mi after the first change (the first gear was slipping Summer 2008 on a friggin high way entrance, couldn't get the car moving until i stuck it on second!! talk about Volvo for life... my lil' bro was freaking out, he thought i was playing a really really bad joke on him, everyone was hoking and all, i dunno.... hope this current transmission works) the last transmission has been ok tho

BTW if you get extended warranty, don;t go with wynn or whatever insurance.... THEY SUCK.... i filed in a claim for my transmission and they said "sorry, we can not provide you with all the money because of operational costs, and you have exceeded our limit" WHAT THE HECK.... isn't that what buying the warranty was for, soo when you are in mechanical trouble they bail you out!!! err.... not happy.. not happy (BTW i settled with them so that i could only pay 400 dollar of the 6k)

Fortunately I have a Volvo warranty so it has not cost me a dime yet except in lost time and aggrevation. MY mechanic just told me that thay found radiator fluid in my transmission and that was what probably caused the trans to go bad so quickly. I never heard of that, but they are going to change the radiator also. I will probably get rid of the car soon. Have you ever heard of the radiator fluid scenario?

XC 90 2nd tranny installed todayXC 90 2nd tranny installed today I'm picking up the car 12/11/08 in the am. .We have a 2004 xc90 and the 1st tranny went before we had 30k miles and the second at 83k. After the first one went we bought the extended warranty. I'm being told that my charge is $1800. I can't review my ext war since its still in the car BUT... if the basic warrenty is 4 years 50k and i purchused the extended warranty for 50k (total 100k)and it must have been for 2 or 3 yrs on the extended why would i be paying anything? I'm in for the class action, even if they pay all i couldn't sell this car or trade it with its history for any more than peanuts which means i own it till its dead and totally worthless. Can i expect a third tranny any time soon? thanks

T6 trans and radiators by mpmoore

My Volvo service manager and regional rep said that replacement of the raditor and cooling system is standard procedure when the T6 transmission fails. They are linked together in order to cool the transmission and when the transmission fails debris migrates into the cooling system. If the cooling system isn't replaced the debris returns to the new transmission once it is installed--which might be why some owners are having to replace the transmission twice in a short time frame. Particular if the cooling system wasn't replaced.

Selling it is a good idea. My was repaired a few days ago and the only miles it has seen is from the dealership directly to the auto auction. The new owner will get a great car--with new transmission, cooling system and warranty. I on the other hand will be able to sleep nights.

The regional managers and dealers have great latitude in how they accomodate this. I had no extended warrranty--was out of the factory warrranty and had a cost of $200 for them to replace the transmission and cooling system. I called the factory, service manager and got the regional rep involved to get our settlement. They do desrve a class action suit.

Hello: my vehicle has 150,000 km on it and when it is cold out the vehicle makes a "drum beat" noise that gets faster as the car accelerates and slower as the car slows down. Once the vehicle is warm the noise goes away (after about 7 minutes) this noise never happens in the summer.

Anyone have any idea what is happening? Noise comes from under the vehicle and sounds like metal banging on metal. The dealer can not find the problem and I am wondering what is wrong.

Thanks.

Well first, thanks for all the previous postings it will help when I call my local Volvo dealer tomorrow. Today I dropped off my '04 T6 with 62,000 miles on it with the same error message. Transmission Service Warning with limited lower gears and slippage when changing gears. I am in the USA, South Carolina, local dealership is Dick Dyer.

My first indication about this problem was a metallic sound that I only heard when the car was coasting. (As long as the accelerator was press a little, no noise. The second that I took my foot off the accelerator I would hear this sound. Not brakes)

I will use all of the information that I have learned online via this forum and other websites (http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints/index.cfm) to help all those following this issue and try and get Volvo to finally realize that the GM transmission isn’t a good match for the T6 engine!

I will keep everyone informed of the specifics of what I find out.
