It cools the fuel charge and allows you to run a higher boost without detonation, or in a n/a car, it would allow a leaner fuel mixture and better MPG. This concept is as old as the hills, and has been used on cars for many decades, often to keep the combustion chambers clean of carbon in the early days.
The downside is that if you are running for really high power and high boost, you're going to need a helluva lot of water to accomplish this. And if you don't fill your water tank and don't filter the water, watch out.

Mr_Shiftright is absolutely correct!
Remember when our boys flew over the European skies against tyranny, the Luftwaffe ME-109 Messerschmitt used Methanol-Water Injection, and that was during the mid-40's! Talk about old school, haha.
