Reverse Gear "R" green light not working

This started few months ago. When I shift transmission to reverse, green "R" light does not come on. This in turn disables reverse lights in the back of the car which makes me harder see the things in the back when I am backing during evening hours. Also, other drivers don't know I am backing out from the parking lot since the reverse light is not working.If I lightly shift the gear shifter up and down I can see the Green "R" light (and also light in the back of the car), but when I lift my hand off the gear shifter, "R" light is off again. Any clue as to why is this happening. Many thanks.

This is just a guess I'm throwing out but it sounds like the problem my mother had on her Ford. The linkage for the transmission needed adjustment. If thats the case bring it in to a transmission shop and they should be able to fix it in 15 minutes. I hope that this is the problem for you because it wouldn't cost much at all.
