happened again by kabrimm

I shorted (1243) of corolla.
I covered 43 to make it an even (1200)
portfolio showed I had (1241)
covered 1241
portfolio showed I had 41 shares
sold 41 shares

According to my monies in and out looks like I made almost $52K on the shenanigans, but it doesn't make it right...

I played with this a bit more last night. It seems if I trade below 100 shares it works normally. I tried 2 complete (4) transactions last night. The first 56 and the second 99 shares and had no problems. I was going to try 100 exactly, but being the night before an IPO and all, didn't feel like potentially losing money.

We will have to look at this after the IPOs go live, as that is taking up all our resources at the present moment (sorry about that). I'll investigate your issue later this morning Pacific Time.

The transaction process seems to be a little wonky. I've shorted a few stocks in the past hour or so that have shown up as "Sell" rather than "Short." This is after not previously owning any of the stock. Then when I cover the short, the transaction shows up as a "Buy," rather than a "Cover." The transaction prices on both ends seem to be inverted as a result.

On a different occasion, the transaction showed up as "Sell/Short" instead of just "Short." The other end was listed as "Cover/Buy." That was the first time I had ever seen that terminology.

I double checked that I didn't previously own any of the stocks in question, and I also verified the issue by trying a transaction with only 100 shares (this would be the last Corolla transaction in my Transaction List).

I have no doubt that I am extremely capable of user error, but I don't think that's the case here

Sometimes you will see a hyphenated transaction if two different things happened at once (a buy that covers a short and then adds additional shares because the amount is over the amount you originally shorted). The same applies with shorts too.

I have tried a few transactions in my own account and I am not seeing similar problems. The transactions are going through as I specify and are being tracked in the Transaction List, but that doesn't mean something isn't off.

If you have a specific transaction from your list, we can look up your history to see what might have happened.

Thanks, mikedrud. The last 2 Corolla transactions at the top of my list (100 shares each) are the test case I refer to.

Mike you can also take a look at my transition list if you need more examples. My first trade of Audi on 04/08/08 indicates as a "sell" although I did not have any stocks. it was fixed later today as you see my Astra "short" on top of transition list.

The price seemed to be inverted on my last trade also. I covered 21000 of Genesis for just over $48 a share, but my portfolio is showing Cover/Buy for $52.70 a share. I refreshed the page to make sure i didn't buy additional shares and sure enough, i don't have any shares of Genesis anymore.

I'll have to see if it does this on other covers.

Make sure you read the "Shorting Explained" thread on this Forum too to make sure you've read your Transaction List correctly.
