Comparison Test, by Proxy: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro vs. 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 - The 2010 Camaro is a little harder to figure because Chevy won't release official specifications on the production car for some time. But it's not like the car is going to have a four-cylinder turbodiesel and a third row of seats. (more)

You really can't compare / make a guess that the upcoming Camaro's weight will be less than the GTO (the rebadged Monaro and particularly the original). They were in different classes and served different markets, one a pony the other muscle.

The new Camaro is closer to the Monaro/GTO than you may think, even in weight. The old Camaros were unit-body, starting with the first-gen (which shared the front sub-frame with the Chevy II/Nova and it's Poncho stable-mate). The Goat was a mid-size BOF car (unless you count that 73/74 POS Nova rebadge). I do think the new Camaro will be more robust than the previous gens; I just hope the ergonomics are vastly improved over the 3rd & 4th-gen; unless you were the driver the seating (especially front-passenger) in those things were horrendous!!

Unfortunately all these cars are behemoths. But right now I'd take a Challenger Hemi first (you can keep the overpriced SRT8), Mustang second, Camaro last. But this may change - I need to get my fingers on the Mopar and the Chevy before final judgment

Very true. When Edmunds learn to actually drive AND be knowledgable regarding tehcnical performance information, they'll be relevant.

Reading the imagined test was interesting, but remember the G8 GT is only based on the Holden SS.The Camero like the G8 GXP will be based on HSV which have tighter suspension and Brembo Brakes which are much better than on SSnot to mention the 6.2 V8. I don't understand why only 402 hp when HSV have 425hp (317kw).

I think challengers are nice, interior and exterior surly came along way. i feel that they've made an car for the future. But, the camaro is by far the best. read the specs, its all there. A "base model" challenger has 250hp, 0-60 5.6 seconds where as a "base model" camaro has 300+ 0-60 4.6seconds.head to head with a mustang GT.

The first mistake is the fact that the challenger is offered with 3 different transmissions
1. 6-speed manual TREMEC trans
2. 5-speed automatic W5A580 rally shift aka. NAG trans
3. 4-speed automatic 42RLE

only the NAG and TREMEC will be available on the SRT-8 and R/T models while the 4-speed is reserved for the cost effective base model.

So with this new information it is impossible to guess what each car can do however the horsepower ratings on the cars are based off the engine not the wheels and the Challenger with the 6-speed will deliver more of it to the road which is why it posts a 0-60 in under 5 seconds and is very close to the 12 sec. mark in the quarter. When the EPA regulations are lifted from the car by a cold air intake, full exhaust, and computer reprogram the 6.1L hemi is capable of producing over 600 hp as demonstrated in mopars drag pack challenger which is available to order for $35,000 at your MOPAR parts dept. as a non-VIN part number.
