Diesel Knock sudden increase in volume by balloothebear

Hi,

Just bought a 2006 Diesel CRV (cdti) 18k miles. So far the car is great, very smooth, 40+MPG, and no diff noise!!

However, at low speeds (and revs), usually accelerating out of roundabouts etc (Between 25 to 35 MPH), the Diesel Knock (as I call it) suddenly gets a lot worse, approx twice as loud, then after about 5 seconds of continued acceleration it goes back to its normal level - There is no change in the accelerator pedal position.

I am not new to diesel engines, but I am new to Honda, and I've never heard the Diesel Knock increase in volume on any of my other cars.

I have about 6 months left on the warranty, so if I have a problem, I'd like to ID it before then. The nearest dealer is quite a treck, so any info you may have would be appreciated.

Cheers.

03 CR-V suspension creaking by gary_forte

After a rough winter all 4 wheels had started to creak when pulling into driveways or pulling away after a stop. It is like the suspension needs a grease job. The car has 80,000 miles.

help with noise by geenee

The back passenger side rear on my 2002 CRV has recently started to make a constant noise. I can't really describe the noise, only to say a low purr not a squeal. It's not the brakes, that we know, and it does seem to vary with volume at certain speeds.

We noticed also recently a noise with the car making sharp turns on the one off ramps of the highway. At first we thought the tire was bad, though they are fairly new, rotated the tires and the noise is still there. Can anyone help?

Could a differential problem cause a constant noise?

Is the car safe to drive?

We plan on calling the service department tomorrow, but i am worried ..... Help!

We also have the same exact model and hear the same "faint high pitched, intermittent trilling or ringing sound, usually on freeways, going uphill and with a heavier load"

Did you ever find the solution?

We intend to mention to dealer during our next scheduled oil change

Update on my noise...

Not sure I would call mine a high pitched noise, just a sudden increase in the pitch of the "diesel knock" that you get with all diesel engines.

The dealer sent out there master technician to have a listen, but as expected, it did not make the noise - the engine was up to temperature when he had a listen.

From my description he said it sounded like a timing chain possibly tapping against the engine block when the engine is cold and at certain engine revs - he suggested that this was not really anything to worry about - and if it got worse, bring it in!!

Sound similar to "let it develop", which is what the grease monkey down the road said!

I'm still letting mine develop!!

Great car though, currently getting 44MPG on short runs to school etc, managed 47.9 last month on a long trip (400ish Motorway miles)!

Thanks,
Joe.

If you are driving aorund with the differential making noise and you don't replace the fluid you are basically asking for a new differential.

Fluid replacement: $10 -$80 (depending if you DIY or dealer)
Differential replacement: $500 - $1000.

Which would you prefer?

Low Machine Gun sounding noise when changing gear by tonyp48

I have a 2006 CRV CTDi Diesel. I get a very low sounding machine gun type noise for a few seconds when the engine is cold and I am changing from 2nd to 3rd gear before reaching 2500/3000 rpm. I don't get the noise all the time and definitely not when the engine is warm. I have contacted Honda and was told the noise is a characteristic of the car. Do you have any views on this?
