Saturn Aura or Saturn VUE or Chevrolet Malibu by boxycass

I was told that maybe I could ask my question here & host would copy it to the other appropriate forums?

I'm in the process of looking to replace my '97 2 door GrandAm with almost 125,000 miles on it. I've been looking seriously at the Saturn Aura, Saturn VUE and the Chevrolet Malibu. Anyone have any pros and/or cons of each of these?

We also have a 2003 TrailBlazer that I LOVE. So I do already have a SUV so not sure I really need another one even though the VUE is smaller & more fuel efficient. I've also been struggling to determine the differences between the Aura & the Malibu. I will admit to liking the sales approach at the Saturn dealership better than our local Chevrolet dealership. BUT I can use GM card earnings on a Chevrolet & I can't on the Saturn.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Which do you prefer, performance (very quick acceleration, like 0-60 in 6 sec) and mountain roads, or a comfortable ride with high mileage?
The 3.6 V-6/6sp auto can deliver the former with like 28+ MPG. The I-4 can get you like 30 MPG.
My Aura XR with the 3.6 is a lot of fun to drive in the mountains and at the stop light Grand Prix. It blows away just about any sedan under $40,000.

Thanks for your input phaetondriver. I want decent mpg, especially in the city b/c of the amount of driving I do with work, errands etc. But I also like comfort. I know wishy-washy

Did anyone test drive both the XE with the 6 and the XR. I have test driven the XR and really liked the car....but wasn't sure if the $1K or more difference in the two vehicles was worth the additional HP. Any real life stories?

I bought the XR after driving all the Saturn Aura models. There isn't a bit of difference to speak of with gas mileage between the 2 V6s, but there is a big difference in performance. If I had to do it again, I would still have gotten the XR.

I have been getting 27 mpg going back and forth to work, but I have a mostly 2 lane highway commute without much stop and go. I also have the power to make passes when I need to.

Husband drives about 1,000 miles/month. We have several thousand dollars credit on GM card; not sure how much, I need to check this next week. Husband will not buy foreign made car. He knows many Toyotas, etc. are manufactured here, but he is firm on this. I think our insurance company is going to declare his 2000 Saturn LS a loss (101K miles, has served us well until a recent accident), so we'll get some money from that.

We live in northern California so weather is not an issue. We keep our cars a long time. My 1998 Avalon has 166K miles. He wants a 4 cylinder for the gas mileage, but we want the flexibility of installing a car seat in the back for our grandson. Daughter and family live out of state so visits are infrequent.

Would appreciate all comments. Thanks so much.

We just bought a 2008 VUE Redline and love it, and we have 16 grandchildren. The small ones are held in great in car seats in the back. Best get the XE though if your looking for better mileage. Or, wait for the Greenline to arrive.

I recently purchased a honda accord, but I really wanted the chevy malibu. I have never bought a domestic car, but the Malibu is flat out amazing. I had a tight budget and get a really good deal on the accord so I bought the accord. The styling, engineering, and smooth lines are great. Every review I have read about the Malibu has been very good to excellent. Its on car and drivers top 10. Also, for 2009 the LS and LT1 will have the option of a 6 speed automatic. There should be some good deals on the Malibu since 2009's will start be produced in about 1 month from the forums I have read online. It is the hottest selling vehicle GM has and I think the resale value will be better even though you keep you cars for a long time.

I suggest you look at the Aura XE 3.5. I've put about 5K miles on mine so far on business trips and it sips gas like a 4 cylinder, but, offers decent performance as well. In the hilly state where I live, I've never had much luck with either fuel economy or longevity with a 4 cylinder mid-sizer.
