#259 of 547 Mazda 2009 CX-9 Transmission Problem?
Mar 31, 2010 (12:57 pm)
I bought a brand new CX-9 2009 last August. After 350 miles, problems started. The car felt as if the clutch disc was worn, and I had to step on the gas to gain power, with the engine roaring like crazy. This happens when the car is level, and has nothing to do with going up a mountain as was described earlier.
I took it back 2 times to the dealer, Southern States Mazda in Wake County, NC and asked for a replacement. The sales team gave me all sorts of excuse, and were very much indifferent. The mechanic informed me that there was a problem, but he could not identify it. He reinstalled the transmission software, but in vain. Finally, they brought a Mazda specialist who said that the car was within specs.
The problem is that the car sometimes drives normally and the problem just disappears. I took the car to another dealer in Durham who are more friendly and professional, but could not replicate the problem.
Anyone experienced the same problem? any suggestions?
Thanks a million!

You probably have a bad transmission or bad temp sensor for the transmission,
Anyway, if one can't reproduce the issue, one can't fix it.
No one is going to give you a new car. No one will give you a new transmission w/o evidence that it is shot. That is the way it is.
The transmission is supplied by Aisin who also supply transmissions to Lexus.
So far, I have only heard of another transmission issue from a guy in Maxico.
CX9 don't have many transmission issue as far as I know.

I have the same problem with the 4th and 6th gears in my 2008 cx9. Mazda told me the noise is something they have seen in some cars and there is nothing they could do. I fell unsafe driving this car. I feel that the driver shaft is going to fall off anytime. The mechanics at Mazda heard the noise and they don't think I am just complaining. My Mazda has a 19K miles.

You should call MazdUSA and complain about it.
MazdaUSA is much more helpful than HondaUSA or ToyotaUSA.
It is still under powertrain warranty if I am not mistaken.

Ok so today I drove to work everything was fine. When leaving i tried getting into the car but my Keyless entry system was not working. So I had to take the key out and unlock the door manually. I then started the car and started driving and my TCS Off came on, the traction control light, the BSM light, the oil light, the key light and my turn signals were not working. Then I drove to the dealership. While driving there the lights would go off and my turn signals would go on. Then signals would go off and all the lights would go on again. Once at the dealership I needed to get some stuff out of the trunk but the locks were not working. So I manually opened back seat and had to climb over to get things out.
Besides all of this I too have terrible tires. They need to be replaced and I only have $20,000 miles on the car. I have skidded into curbs during the winter to avoid hitting cars since it would not stop.
After today, not sure i feel so safe driving this car with my kids in it. Hopefully they find a fix. This is the SECOND time the TCS light has been coming on also. So if it happens a 3rd time i'll be working towards that lemon law.
Has anyone else had this type of electrical problem. Hopefully they find the problem and its not too serious.

It sounds like you have a occasional short in electrical system somewhere.
There is a known problem with the 12V power socket inside the console.
Tire? 20K is about average.
I couldn't wait to get rid of the lousy tires from Mazda.
BTW, same tires can be found on Toyota Highlander. Just FYI.
Try Yokohama Spec-X. You will not regret it.

I have 18K and I need new tires. Also, sometimes my windows open and close by themselves, but I can't replicate at the dealer. I am thinking of trading my CX9 with a more reliable similar style car, any suggestions?

Well, Mazda called the problem is a bad Body Control Module. Hopefully this fixes it. I do plan on replacing these terrible tires. I plan on getting the yokohama parada's. I am hoping since the snow is gone though to get a few more months with the current ones and then adding the new ones come fall.

you will have to look up their reliability ratings but the usual players in this segment are Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Acura MDX, Ford Flex, GM Lambda SUVs (Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave). Too bad about your CX-9...perhaps it was a lemon. mine has been trouble-free since purchase last year.
