Comparison Test: 2008 Dodge Charger R/T vs. 2008 Pontiac G8 GT - You know, big, fast American cars. They're not hybrids, they don't run on biodiesel and they rumble and roar through dual exhausts. And they do the sort of epic burnouts that inspire Bruce Springsteen songs. (more)

While the rest of the world is getting fast, good performance, high mileage cars based on the new Diesel technology in Germany and Hybrid technology from Toyota. The Americans are often building an 8Cyclinder stylish car that looks like it is from the late 90's. If you guys don't wake up in 2009 you will loose another 20% of your market share when many more of these cars come from overseas. Come on US give me a reason to buy American!!! Like my first american care that I bought.

Those Holden Designs from the 70s look pretty good. One of our grills and presto- change -o , a car for export to the US. Just wish one of those pics had Olivia Newton John behind the wheel or better yet, stretched out on the hood... she's one of your best exports, ever.

Keep an open mind about Ford. I just bought my second (out of 25 plus GM vehicles) in over 41 years of driving. Hint - It's an 08 and Steve McQueen would approve.

#1 with a bullitt / SRT8 performance without mpg penalty by elias

cap232flyboy, did you get the green or the black? This GM guy prefers your particular mustang!
I saw another SRT8 today. If we are going to goof on the GTO styling we should have a laugh riot about the SRT8. Even the GTO's or G8's bland/whatever styling is greatly preferable to the hearse-like SRT8, with the tiny 1950s-ZZtop-car windows.
to each his own, about styling. now onto mpg:
GTO easily gets 20+ mpg in mixed driving, 25+ mpg highway with non-ethanol gasoline, probably G8 will be about the same.
Apparently the SRT8 gets about 21 mpg highway, 15 otherwise.
Looks like charter-RT mpg is way better than SRT8.

Seems like the G8/GTO give SRT8-like performance, but without a 25% or 30% mpg penalty like the SRT8 owners are stuck with?

Steve McQueen would never cruise the streets of San Francisco in black.

As I said before, there's a clicking/clacking and whirring/whistling noise coming from the car (engine knock?).

The noise in the G8 video appear to be coming from the camera car not the G8. I have done quite a few miles (km) in a VE Commodore and can assure you it didn't make any noise like in the video.

Mate,
Has it got a Limited Slip Diff. The Mustang.
I saw the one they tested on TOP Gear I guess a year ago.
Didn't have one and was a bit of a handful.

The Mustang GT comes standard with a limited slip diff. At least, it did for the '05 redesign and earlier; don't know about now. I think it may have become optional on the '06 and later GTs.

Not sure why you guys are comparing the G8 GT v. the SRT8. A more fair comparo will be the G8 GXP v. the SRT8. Unfortunately Chrysler missed the boat in not even offering an MT for their top of the line performance car. The GXP will be available with a 6MT, and I think that is a BIG factor, showing they actually realize the car may be brought to the road course.

I'm looking at a G8 GT and so far, I'm liking it, and I'm a die-hard Japanese car fan.
