Comparison Test: 2008 Dodge Charger R/T vs. 2008 Pontiac G8 GT - You know, big, fast American cars. They're not hybrids, they don't run on biodiesel and they rumble and roar through dual exhausts. And they do the sort of epic burnouts that inspire Bruce Springsteen songs. (more)

why so quick?? vs Charger R/T by rayainsw

Why is the G8 GT posting ‘such good quarter mile times’?
I believe that part of the answer here is the gearing.
The Edmunds test refers to the 2.92:1 final drive ratio.
Not considered very ‘aggressive’, normally.
In this particular case, paired with the 6L80’s first gear ratio of 4.03:1, it actually is fairly aggressive.

[[ For reference, the 2006 – 2008 Corvettes with versions of the motor and this automatic trans. have standard final drive ratios of 2.56:1. And now, for 2008, an optional ‘performance’ axle ratio – of 2.73:1. ]]

The Charger R/T’s first gear ratio is 3.58:1 and the final drive ratio is 2.82:1.

[[ This means the G8 GT ‘launches’ with around 10% greater mechanical advantage. Assuming that the tire diameters are approx. 7% different ( the Charger’s tires, in the Edmunds test are 225/60x18s vs 245/40x19s on the G8 GT w/Sport Pkg - means the Charger has roughly 7% higher RPM ) and assuming similar initial Torque Converter behavior in the 2 automatic transmissions. ]]

AND ( I think particularly relevant here ) Pontiac chose a final drive ratio that allows the G8 GT to hit the Quarter Mile lights at the very top of Third Gear.
Third gear redline ( 6,000 RPM ) is 104 MPH.
And the Quarter Mile Terminal Velocity in each test I have seen so far is between 102.8 and 104.1 MPH.
So: The motor is at peak HP and no 3 – 4 shift is required before the end of the Quarter.
The Charger ( non-SRT8 ) in tests I have see is geared for 118 MPG in Third gear – and clears the Quarter running at roughly 97 to 101.

Just my 0.02 gallons worth . . .
- Ray
Pleased to see these acceleration times . . .

It doesnt take much to figure out that I car that weighs less, has more power is going to be faster. So whats the point?I still like the looks of the Charger better then the G8.Gas keeps going up,so I dont think the sales will be that great.

While reading the article, I got a chuckle. I love it when they say that the G8 is as fast or nearly as fast as the SRT8, which I own. On it's worst day and not with trying will it turn a 5.4. On many runs she averages 4.8-4.9, which is well below the number they show.

By the way, I believe the G8 is a great vehicle and it should do well.

I did the same thing you did.The SRT Challeger does the 0-60 in 4.7sec.and the 1/4 in .13.1 This is in the new Car and Driver Mag.The Challenger is no light weight coming in at 4150.They are trying to make the G8 look good seeing that the GTO was a failure.

sales # under which RT or SRT8/challenger would be a failure?! by elias

what's the sales # per year under which the SRT8 or challenger or charger-RT would be considered a failure like you consider GTO, xtec & budo ?
how is SRT8 doing for sales/inventory so far - maybe that will somewhat indicate how well challenger & charger-RT will do sales-wise?
aren't G8 sales capped by the slow-boats from down under?
in a sales-comparo, would we pick the same # for G8 & charger-RT
as being an indication of sales success/failure?

Put it this way The Charger is still around and the GTO is gone. Why because they couldn't sell the GTO.

I was sitting out front of work the other day having a break.
There was this car parked out front, fugliest looking thing I have ever seen.
Didn't know what it was until I saw that video of the Dud Chunder vs G8.
Looks like one person designed the front and another did the back.
They didn't quite meet up in the middle.
Was it designed in India?

THe G8 is boring looking just like the GTO.It has no performance looks to it.The roof line is typical family sedan. The back is plain jane looking. To me The front of the G8 and the rear should be on differant cars.At least the Charger looks like a muscle car.Once again Pontiac failed to have a car that looks like a performance car.Thats what killed the GTO.

There are multiple reasons why the Goat died:
1) The reason we all know : Unappealing styling
2) The reason most of us know : The platform was due to be phased ,out irregardless of how many they sold. Remember , the 1994-96 Impala SS was a roaring success , but the General killed it because they made a poor decision to drop the rear -wheel drive architecture.
3) The reason few of us know : The UAW was annoyed with Bob Lutz for bringing a Holden product state side. In an effort to appease the union, a cap of 18,000 units was agreed upon for 2004-06. The only reason GM improved the car (appearance and performance ) in 2005 was because : a) Buyer backlash b) dealer's p.o. ed because Goats sat and nearly rusted away on their lots c)Lutz had egg on his face and his ego wouldn't allow him to admit that he underestimated American resolve to have a design worthy of the name, even though it performed quite well.

Apparently , the UAW has made concessions because we all know that the G8 platform is here along with the soon to arrive Camaro derivative .And , the Opels are already here from Europe in Saturn ad Malibu trims.
