I can't imagine why someone from Toyota would tell you that the side airbags will deploy only in case of a rollover. That is dead wrong. For example, it is clear the side airbags deployed in both the NHTSA and IIHS side impact tests, which hit the middle of the driver's side, straight-on.

One possibility here is that the point of impact was on one end of the car vs. in the middle. Your note about "being spun around 180 degrees" indicates that this in fact might have happened. The side airbags are triggered by sensors. If the car is hit where there are no sensors, e.g. in the front or rear fender, it's possible the airbags won't inflate. That happened to me recently when my Jetta was hit on the driver's side front fender, and the car spun around from the impact. No air bags inflated, but all I got was a bump on the head.

If you have not yet reported this incident to the NHTSA you might want to do that. If there is reason to believe the airbags should have deployed and did not, they could start an investigation. Or they could use the data to support a change in SRS design, e.g. change when side bags are deployed.

hello everyone I just wanted to say after reading your reviews that I have had no issues with my 09 corolla.I have just over 7,000 miles on it.no rattles or any of that funny stuff so far.the onl thing i have noticed is that it does run ruff when I just sitting at a idle I see the tach go up then down and it feels like it is skipping but once it's in gear it's great.

Well a new car certainly should not idle rough. I would certainly have it checked since it's still under warranty.

09 Corolla 1.8L Engine Training by cpu8900

Hi everyone.....I finally had the opportunity to buy a 09 Corolla 1.8L
engine from a junkyard. The engine is basically complete minus
the usual items they will resell: Alternator, starter, and most of the front
engine pulley components.
It didn't cost much since the block was cracked from the accident
and unrepairable, but it's fairly clean and will make a great teardown
for someone like me that loves working on engines and I'll be able
to see exactly what my own engine looks like internally. After I'm done
with it I'll probably donate it to a local technical school for training.
I have it mounted on my engine stand and will report back as it's
dismantled.

For those that change their own oil......if you buy a 65mm 14 flute
oil cap wrench it will fit the plastic filter cap just right and make the
job much easier.

Correct Oil Filter Cap Wrench 09 Corolla by cpu8900

Please disregard the 65mm size I stated above.

The correct size for the oil filter cap wrench is 64mm with 14 flutes
(flats) on the wrench......the 65mm will slip and not fit firmly on the flats.

It can be obtained from Amazon.com for about $12.95 and $4.99
shipping. Search for "Avalon oil filter wrench".

You'll see several reviews there from people that have used
this wrench and that it fits the filter cap correctly.

I don't think the 64mm is correct, because the Toyota part # 09228-06500-02 is made by SPX Corp. and is listed as a 65mm.

Mcdawg,
Yes you are correct. I apologize for the misinformation. You need the cap wrench that fits 65mm only. The 65mm-67mm wrench is the one that slips. I bought my 65mm cap wrench at Advance Auto Parts for $4.00 I hope I didn't confuse anybody. I repeat, you need the cap wrench that fits 65mm only.

09 1.8L Engine by cpu8900

I made some progress on the disassembly of the 1.8L engine.

All the valve train components have been removed and
disassembled including: both camshafts, valves, springs and
timing chain, head and gasket. Nothing really impressive
except the cam gears assembly that allows for the VVT (variable
valve timing).

I found it interesting that this teardown engine was also
missing the oil filter plastic cap......people might be having
to replace these if they use improper means/tools for service.
