Immobilizer Key by luckins

I guess I should say immobilizer rather than a kill switch. It gets warm around where the plastic of the key meets the metal. I've heard of several people key's getting very hot, but I haven't really driven too long with this car, so it hasn't happened to me, yet. I was wondering if it is a common thing with this car.

Yes, my 2005 Hatchback's key also got extremely warm, but it never failed to work correctly or cause any problems that I was aware of...

I asked this question on another car forum and they seem to indicate that it is probably not a problem. I took off all metal keychains on my keyring and put a jumper ring between the car key and the house keys. I haven't driven much, lately, so I can't tell if it got better by doing that.

Gets Very Hot by luckins

I drove all day, mostly off and on, and I noticed the key got very, very warm (if not hot) as well as the CDs in the CD player. The longest time I drove continuously was about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The key was uncomfortable to hold, but not hot enough to handle or melt the plastic covering off the top and the CDs weren't damaged. I also drove 2.5 hours with the sun on the dashboard and key, stopping a couple of times for about 15 minutes, and got the same result.

The dealer says that they have a TSB about keys that get blazing hot, but not warm. When the weather warms up, I'm afraid this might get worse and I will look into getting this fixed. But, with the rise in gas prices, I may not be taking any long trips for a while and this doesn't affect my normal, daily, driving, so I don't think I need to have this fixed right now.

I noticed that there is an isolated box attached to the ignition cylinder and it seems like this box is what is getting hot. They made sure this box is completely separated from all other components and gave it space for air to keep it cool. So, this may be normal by design, or they expected it to get heated up, so they made sure it wasn't going to touch anything. The wires seem fine and don't get hot. So, I will ask the dealer about this little box, especially if I can point it out to them when it's blazing hot.
