I'm a student at Lehigh University who is working on a design project with GM. Our mission is to redesign the Cobalt's cupholders, and we need your input.

Please take a minute to answer a few questions, and maybe you'll see your ideas implemented in the '09 Cobalt.

1. What is the best location for a cup holder?
a. in front of the shifter (current location)
b. next to the emergency brake
c. in the air (e.g. from the dashboard)
d. other (please specify):

2. Should the cup holder have the ability to be hidden? Yes No

3. If the cup holder is hidden, what is the best way to hide it?
a. cover with a sliding door
b. cover with a hinged door
c. put in dashboard
d. other (please specify):

4. Should the cup holders for the back seat be moved? Yes No

5. Should the cup holder have the ability to heat and/or cool?
a. heat
b. cool
c. both
d. no preference

6. Should the cup holder be adjustable? Yes No

7. Would you be willing to adjust the holder yourself, or should it be self-adjusting?
a. you adjust
b. self-adjusting
c. no preference

Any additional comments or suggestions? Thank you for your input.

He's probably talking about drinking water, juice, soft drinks, coffee, tea or hot chocolate here.

I am a believer of no food or drink in the car also. I can see a drink maybe on a long multi-hour drive but that is about it.

First, it is great to see that some thought is going into the Cobalt cup holders because the current ones are not that great (not that cup holders really factor in when I am purchasing a car, but it is good to see anyway).

1. B
2. Yes. I have never really been a fan of this, but some people use the cup holder for storage and in that case you might want to cover it.
3. A
4. No. I own the coupe and they are perfectly placed for that because nobody would put a third person in the back and that would be the only time they would get in the way.
5. D
6. Yes
7. B

For #6 and #7 see something like the Honda Civic and Jeep Liberty cup holders. They have spring loaded arms that conform to many shapes to hold drinks of various sizes (because everybody's containers are different). It is a simple and cheap design that is remarkably effective. The Civic even has a simple sliding cover to answer #2.

I agree with robmonster they should conform to a cup size like most new cars do now. In the Nissan I test drove the cup holder was small and spring loaded for personal adjustment to secure fast food cups, cans, bottles, or unconventional sizes. I also think since the Cobalt has such little interior space it should have the 2 extra at the side pockets like the new Focus has giving it 4 spaces for drinks in the front seat. The back seat holder should have the ability to be hidden like my Escape's. It was a pull down holder which allowed for foot room if you had 3 in the back sitting but allowed for easy to hold drinks with the pull down system. It also allowed the middle arm rest to be bigger and deeper which I like better than the current one to store things like my iPod, cell phone chargers and pens and CDs. This concept would fit in this car better than the current set up.
