Walking around the lot, waiting for oil change, I saw at least 30. Lots of snow up here in MA so sales may be slower but we've got plenty.

new colors on 08? by percussionist

Where can we find these new colors? I love the Mazda 3 hatch, but the ONLY color I like forces me to get the speed, which is a really awesome car, but gets pitiful mileage and requires premium fuel. Otherwise, I'd have to get black, which I fear will fade over time.

I looked on Mazda's website, and it does not show any new colors for the 3 (even though I have seen some on the road). Does anyone know where any pictures of new colors could be found? Thanks!

I agree the premium fuel thing is a bit annoying, but worth it I've had my Speed 3 for over a year and average about 22-24 MPG in normal driving. This includes lots of turbo assisted acceleration. That's not as good as it's naturally aspirated relatives, but I wouldn't call it pitiful.

It's not that bad if you do the math; if I drive 15,000 miles per year and my car averages 22 mpg I will use 682 gallon of gas. In my area premium costs twenty cents more than regular, so the difference comes to the princely sum of $136. That works out to $11.33 per month- less than thirty-eight cents per day. That's nothing.

My MS3 gets about the same mileage. I just ordered the Mazdaspeed CAI, but I doubt that it will have any effect on my fuel economy. I think 22 mpg is excellent for a car that can click off a 14 second quarter mile and tops out at 155.

It can also haul a LAN server and a few workstations, carry my family of 4, and embarrass the heck out a brand new Mustang GT on my favorite back road. For me it's the perfect blend of performance, value, and practicality. That's why I own one

Just yesterday a guy in a G37 tried to stay with me on an increasing radius entrance ramp. Fat chance. When I lifted at 100 I was still pulling on him.
And my Mazdaspeed CAI arrives this week...

When I first started driving mine it felt scary quick. Now I think I'm ready for a bit more. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing your impressions of the MS CAI. I've been toying with the idea of getting one as a birthday present for myself this year. We'll probably have to move this discussion to a different thread, I just saw the name of the one we're in.

Yes, that may be true, but we need to compare apples to apples. If someone isn't going to buy a car because it gets poor mileage AND uses premium fuel, the main drawback is the poor mileage, not the premium fuel.

If I use your same assumption of 20 cents more for premium fuel, then at 3.00/gallon for regular, I'd save $486 every year by driving the regular 3 hatch. At 3.30 for regular, this savings goes up to $520. Since I usually keep my cars 10 years or longer, that will definitely add up to some serious money. All these figures assume 15,000 miles per year like your calculations.

Just a thought

Everyone has different priorities. Me, I share the automotive philosophy of David E. Davis Jr.-"No boring cars!"-so I'm more than happy to pay an additional $520 a year($43/month) to drive the Mazdaspeed. In fact, I actually saved money by choosing the Mazdaspeed3 ; some of the other cars I considered included a 2003 M5 and a 2004 M3. The MS3 should keep me entertained until the 135i based Concept tii sees production-or until my willpower erodes completely and I nab a 993...
And just to clarify things, I don't necessarily equate low horsepower with boredom. My other track rat is 13 years old, struggles to click off a sub-16 second quarter, and just barely nudges 130- but it's one of the most entertaining cars that I've ever owned.

That style of comparison is only valid if you view all cars strictly as transportation. Comparing the Mazda 3 with it's Mazdaspeed sibling is already out of the apples to apples realm. I believe the post that started this was about color availability. As the owner of a Mazdaspeed 3, neither fuel economy or color were my primary criteria. I selected the car based on it's performance and practicality. I then found a color I liked. I certainly didn't reject the standard 3 because of it's superior efficiency and use of regular octane. It just wasn't the kind of car I was looking for. I'm pretty sure those of us who buy performance cars already understand the trade offs. With all that said, I am still impressed with near supercar performance and 24 MPG around town.
