Tesla managed to develop a high-performance, battery-powered electric car when many had pronounced the battery-electric vehicle an unworkable bit of wishful thinking. Super, everybody says.

Tesla will probably be dead if not this year than the next.
The physics of a very fast electric car are not complicated at all and have been available for more than a century, the gist was battery technology which has finally been realized by lithium ion batteries. However the entire concept of the company and the car were stupid to begin with. The car cannot meet its performance goals simply because tesla doesn't even have a real engineering team to design a transmission that any other "real" manufacturer could have designed in a couple of weeks. Furtheremore, how many rich idiots does the world really have that are willing to spend 100K on a contraption built by a couple of yoyo's that will probably run four or five times before it needs fixing from a company that is basicly an oversized backyard garage?????
Any real manufacturer could have built a tesla at any time, all it takes is light weight a simple electric motor and batteries, the technology to do it has been around for ever, the difference is that today you can pretty much do it with stuff you can buy at walmart, the point is that there is no point to the whole excercise!

I don't see the Tesla flying, but the public face is that it's not dead yet.

I think their strategy of producing an exciting car first, never mind the price, is right on the money. They have shocked everyone into realizing how inefficient the internal combustion engine is compared with electric motors. For as long as I can remember, electricity has been thought to be too expensive for anything as mundane as heat or locomotion, or as merely a convenient way to control "real" energy. Now it is beginning to dawn on us that there is such a huge advantage that we could have a hot rod for way less operating cost than we are spending on mundane daily drivers.

I'll be watching to see if they can beat the big guys to market with a practical commuter, and I'll be looking for the IPO, and considering laying down some money.
