What is this discussion about? Pontiac G8, Sedan

First Look: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT - There wouldn't be much to talk about if the G8 was just another V6-powered family sedan, so Pontiac did itself a favor and made sure that a V8 is on the options list. If you order the big engine, it's called the G8 GT. (more)

Full Test: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT - Bottom Line: This is the Pontiac we've all been waiting for. (more)

I like it, but.... by wideglide

Okay, for starters, no manual is a deal breaker. And I don't want to have to spend another $6 Large just to get it...in fact, I won't spend it. They should have been a little more subdued on the restyle. The cheesy honeycomb grill and faux hood scoops look like they were lifted right off a 1977 Formula Firebird (at least they didn't put a screaming chicken on the hood!) How many european sports sedans do you see with fake hood scoops? I could care less about the lack of a nav system. $2-3,000 will buy a lot of maps, and I have a hand-held GPSr that does the job just fine, even if it doesn't talk to me. The price is right, the dynamics seem good. Just give us a choice of trannys, Pontiac! Yes, us Americans are a lazy, shiftless lot (pun intended). Manuals account for only 7% of the cars sold here, compared to something like 70% in Europe. Lazy, lazy people we are!

Yes, lazy if you are the only car on the road on Saturday at 6:00 AM. But during rush hour or that afternoon rush to the beach, auto-row for me.

Can anyone provide me with a link on the subject? Or better yet, a video of one of the mules in action? If I'm going to spend $32K for a GT, I may as well wait and see what the GXP has to offer. I read a rumor it will have a detuned 6.2 V8 making >400hp and some other luxury options, pushing the price up around $35K-$40K.

Also, I hope Pontiac makes some necessary changes to the interior of their 2009 G8 base, GT, and GXP models by using fully-powered front seats (no more knobs for the tilt adjustment), fold-down rear seats, a tach with a red-line, and XM radio.

... Bursitis means I could not now drive any car with a clutch. ...

You need to get those old bones filed down and get a proper transmission in that Vette, man!

... In a sense, I think one could argue that the automatic trans. buyers subsidize the availability of the manual trans. version – for those who want one. ...

It doesn't take much engineering or programming to equip a car with a manual transmission. I think it's the other way around. The manual buyers are subsidizing you slushbox guys' fancy-smancy paddle shifters and "blip on downshift" automatic transmissions.

Not so fast on the price...considering MAP at some dealers for the GT, my new price forecast for G8 GXP is $41 - 44K.

Manual buyers are not subsidizing the auto buyers. In nearly every car with a manual and automatic option, the buyer of the auto is paying a big premium. On a Corvette, the auto is a $1,250 option. If I remember correctly, Corvette sells in volumes in the 30K range each year. If 60% of them are auto's, those auto buyers have paid GM $25 million that GM would not have had if they bought sticks. So no, I do not think the manual buyers are subsidizing auto trannies.

Now keep in mind, this is but one, low volume car too.

On price, bargain? by fformula88

I've been doing a bunch of reading today on the G8. On paper, this car looks like a screaming deal. Very good handling, good acceleration, modern 6 speed tranny, modern platform, all for approximately $30K. I know the car is large, but man, I would much sooner buy a loaded G8 GT at just under $33K than I would pay the same or more money for, say, the new STi (I know they are not direct competitors).

Lack of a stick shift seems fairly glaring however. Even if the GXP gets one, the GXP is going to have a good premium tacked on too. It would still be nice to have a stick available with this V8, if not the V6 too.

This is what I was thinking too. However, after some research I'm finding not too many large sedans with V8 and MT. I am looking at the 2010 Legacy which will be about A6 sized and I'm a diehard Subaru fan, but need a larger sedan, which they'll finally bring here. Problem I'm finding is that it'll have a 3.6L H6 305hp but will only come with a 5EAT and no MT option and will price at mid to high 30s. So I started to research large AWD cars and found there are almost zero MT ones out there.

535ix is about the only one out there and that's got a $60k pricetag.

Here are the "large sedans" with V8s that I seem to see as competitors to the G8 that have MT.

BMW 550i
CTS-V

Competitors with ATs expand a bit:
300/Charger
5 Series
M45
S-Type
GS460
MB E-Class
STS
A6

Out of those only the Charger comes in even remotely close in terms of price. So if you want a sporty car in this segment, you pay >$45k or get a Charger or a G8. That's a pretty good place to be I think.
