First Look: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT - There wouldn't be much to talk about if the G8 was just another V6-powered family sedan, so Pontiac did itself a favor and made sure that a V8 is on the options list. If you order the big engine, it's called the G8 GT. (more)
Full Test: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT - Bottom Line: This is the Pontiac we've all been waiting for. (more)
Okay, for starters, no manual is a deal breaker. And I don't want to have to spend another $6 Large just to get it...in fact, I won't spend it. They should have been a little more subdued on the restyle. The cheesy honeycomb grill and faux hood scoops look like they were lifted right off a 1977 Formula Firebird (at least they didn't put a screaming chicken on the hood!)

The manual buyers are subsidizing you slushbox guys' fancy-smancy paddle shifters and "blip on downshift" automatic transmissions.

On a Corvette, the auto is a $1,250 option. If I remember correctly, Corvette sells in volumes in the 30K range each year. If 60% of them are auto's, those auto buyers have paid GM $25 million that GM would not have had if they bought sticks. So no, I do not think the manual buyers are subsidizing auto trannies. Now keep in mind, this is but one, low volume car too. |

I've been doing a bunch of reading today on the G8. On paper, this car looks like a screaming deal. Very good handling, good acceleration, modern 6 speed tranny, modern platform, all for approximately $30K. I know the car is large, but man, I would much sooner buy a loaded G8 GT at just under $33K than I would pay the same or more money for, say, the new STi (I know they are not direct competitors). Lack of a stick shift seems fairly glaring however. Even if the GXP gets one, the GXP is going to have a good premium tacked on too. It would still be nice to have a stick available with this V8, if not the V6 too.

Replying to: fformula88 (May 03, 2008 1:03 pm) 535ix is about the only one out there and that's got a $60k pricetag. Here are the "large sedans" with V8s that I seem to see as competitors to the G8 that have MT. BMW 550i CTS-V Competitors with ATs expand a bit: 300/Charger 5 Series M45 S-Type GS460 MB E-Class STS A6 Out of those only the Charger comes in even remotely close in terms of price. So if you want a sporty car in this segment, you pay >$45k or get a Charger or a G8. That's a pretty good place to be I think. -mike |
