First Look: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT - There wouldn't be much to talk about if the G8 was just another V6-powered family sedan, so Pontiac did itself a favor and made sure that a V8 is on the options list. If you order the big engine, it's called the G8 GT. (more)
Full Test: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT - Bottom Line: This is the Pontiac we've all been waiting for. (more)

As for the "Buy American" arguement, it is not an American car. With all the globalization and outsourcing these days, it's moot. Which is more "American": a Chevy made in Mexico, or a Honda made in Ohio? And on that note, why the heck doesn't Ford bring the Australian Falcon over here?!? That would really heat up the sports sedan wars. |

I test drove and loved the GTO but didn't buy one because I am a bit old (63 yo) and saw the speeding tickets and insurance premiums which would follow. A very good car, however, (except for humidity control issues on rainy days forever fogging the windshield). The G8 is heavier and slower with a bigger engine jiggered to give less horsepower (I suppose for ecomony). I am interested however because of the quality of the 2004-2006 GTOs (despite the low sales). I wonder why they distributed the picture on the "inside line" which shows major tilt of the front end as it negotiates a fairly tight R handed curve. It looks like the driver's side might bottom out with a little more speed. Also the Bright Red isn't going to draw the desired crowd (see Vance Packard). I'll bet it is a good car but they should market it to adults with families, not young gearheads. The air scoops on the hood are further reason for "conservative" types to avoid it. There aren't enough gearheads to make it successful in the big market. Also the front grille is disappointing. Same old pontiac style. I hoped that they would make a significant change there as well. I am anxious to test drive it. I think Pontiac ought to rethink which market they are targeting. |

Guys, if you buy a G8, just get an edit done. They have been de-tuned quite a lot. If you do a 3" twin exhaust, cold air and a mafless tune, 300rwkw is easily achieved. The manual will be available later in the model run. You should be able to just order a manual anyway through your dealer. Just might have to wait a few months for the car to get there. What do you think of the Coupe 60? http://concept.holdencampaign.com.au/ Check out all the video and specs. I'm loving this car.">link title |

Its too bad car company executives are more interested in building fun cars than building cars that sell. While GM is busy restructuring making job cuts it appears that it is interested in bringing the half-car-half-truck Holden from half a world away Australia to the US. Worse yet the vehicle appears to have a relatively big engine. If that is the case, it wouldn't sell either. So be prepared for another round of job cuts. Instead why not build a real truck but small here in the US like the Sabia, a GM Brazil concept truck. It is a small truck with a small engine and does not appear to be a cross between a car and a truck.

Crappy Chryslers, Dodgie Dodges, Junkie Jeeps, Hippo Hummers and soon, Catatonic Caddys. It's the way of the world I'm afraid. Just think of this, you get OUR cars for far less than we pay for them here. Plus, our fuel is almost $1.40 a litre. I'm not trying to get anyone upset here, but seriously, look outside the United States Bubble of America and see how your Governments mis-management of your Country affects the rest of the world. Banks there lending home loans at 130% the value of the property, insane. Because our banks have investments via US Banks they are caught up in the shocking mess that happened. Our home loan variable rate has gone up from 6.5% to about 9.5% in the last six months and this is starting to affect a large amount of families with a morgage. If I lived in the US I would be voteing with my feet and moving to Canada.

Replying to: holdenguy (Mar 07, 2008 6:16 am) Interesting names for those vehicles. But don't buy them, buy vehicles only enough for your needs and built locally or close to your part of the world. I don't think car company executives care about the pollution created by the transportation of those vehicles all across the globe. I don't think they even care for the companies they work for. All they care about is to get more money from the companies for themselves. We have gasoline mixed with 10% grain alcohol and is about $3.10 per gallon, straight gasoline is about 10 cents higher. My experience is it cost less per mile on straight gasoline. |
