What is this discussion about? Pontiac G8, Sedan

First Look: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT - There wouldn't be much to talk about if the G8 was just another V6-powered family sedan, so Pontiac did itself a favor and made sure that a V8 is on the options list. If you order the big engine, it's called the G8 GT. (more)

Full Test: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT - Bottom Line: This is the Pontiac we've all been waiting for. (more)

poor resale is not just the G8's problem at this point. The economic climate has killed resale values across the board.

Hell, I bought a couple of USED vehicles 9 months ago and both have taken a huge hit since then.

With the possible exception of a new MINI,
[ my daughter bought one recently ]
** ANY ** new car that I can think of will take a
** HUGE ** value depreciation in the first
nine months . . .

Although a bit worse now than in some
prior periods – this has basically always
been true – and generally more so with
“American” nameplates.

Does this actually surprise you?

[ I see: you joined & posted
  so a response seems unlikely . . . ]

Well, real world values have never been a good suit for GM. Even worse for them now. But, yes all values are hurting right now too. Dealers do not want another car sitting on the lot now. That is so bad, a year later. Its too bad, because that new G8 sitting on the lot is not worth near the price tag it holds. If I want a new G8, I am certainly not going to buy new. You are instantly upside down, which is normal anyway, but so upside down, that it will take years to gain anything.

At least, I have a lease on my 08 GM car, so I will walk away. But, having fun while waiting. Its all good.

I feel its going to happen. Without the G8 in the line up, there is not much left to the Pontiac. Its the one brand that would take the most work to get the whole line up in tip top shape. Well, you are forced to keep the car, anyone owning a newer GM car is forced to keep them now, as they are so upside down. That is what is angering me now, that I am about $8k upside down. I know that I still new in the lease, However, I should not be this much in the negative. I have to remind myself, this car is not a Honda or any other competition. Your G8 is above most GM cars, they did a good thing with the car. Just wrong time to put it out. Just like the Camaro.

AND, if they keep playing those stupid commercials, they are only going to tick people off even more. I get more angry with every commercial.. You simply cannot hear that they are closing plants down, and yet play commercials claiming they have all their crap together. You know what? I am not confident. My G6 is only an 08, and I feel the engine is already going to go off. No, they have NOT been doing right since day 1.

Actually, if you truly want that car. Go for it! Hold out for the good deals. That way you are not taking such a big hit on depreciation. In fact, if you want one, buy a used one. Your better off in the end.

I actually like the G8, it is a good start to what they "could" be. Of course too late. Though a few areas on the G8 look to be a bit vulnerable for wear and tear. The quality of the materials used are good, but just a tad bit below what the competition offers already in that segment. I would drive a G8, but it would be hard to get over the fact that it is a GM product. GM is not doing right for the people or the economy. I feel that they have burned their bridge and it will take years for people to believe them and their products the offer. I simply cannot stand behind that. No protection plan they offer now is going to make me feel any better.

But realize the new price tag on the car is no where near its true value. Buying used will be a wise choice. I have a GM car, owe $20,000 and it is only would about $16,000 tops in the real world sale, not to mention the $11,500 trade in value!!! Hows that for a welcome!! I got an email, congratulating me on a 1yr lease ownership on the car. I wish their was a link to reply, boy, they would get an mouthful. The emails should say, Congratulations! Your screwed! Well, for atleast 2yrs more, then my lease is up. Imagine having a massive loan on it?

It was bad before, but now..... WOW!
