better re-check that SmartForSomeone ghastly mileage. I read a review on the Smart car in Automobile magazine and the guy drove from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon and got 31 mpg. Not exactly chart-topping ghastly mileage. The car was buffeted a lot by semis on the freeways but that is what we would expect from a car this size and weight. Although acceleration up to speed takes a while, it seems happy to maintain highway speeds. After two days, I'm happy with the car. Now I'm looking for an in-dash Sirius radio to replace the stock unit. Tom

The mileage as you mention is not good and its rated at something like 32/38 which is bad for this tiny of a car. It would be a good city commuter based on size for parking, but this car would crush like a garbage can in a wreck. It maybe sold out because there is a limited supply for the demand of people who put down money on these things last year thinking it was some kind of miracle car which it is not.

The Aveo was designed at GMDAT (GM Daewoo Automotive Technology) in Korea with imput from Holden (GM Australia) and GM China. I drive daily on the motorway and the Aveo has no trouble staying at 140km/hr.   The smart pure is sold in Canada for $14,900 less a $2000 government rebate. It's top speed is 145km/hr. The smart pure is about $500 less than an Aveo 5 here up north. We have tonnes of smarts on the road. They sell about 14,000 units of smart per year which is about half the number of GM Aveos/Pontiac Waves that are sold per year   The aveo is rated at 5.5litres per 100km of travel or about 43 US MPG for highway driving. My aveo gets an average of about 7.9 litres per 100km combined city/hwy. which is about US 30MPG. Versus 4.2 with smart car or about 65 US MPG.   The ratings for the 2009 smart car:   The new generation of diesel vehicles equipped with advanced technology such as the common rail diesel cdi engines provides an improvement of approximatively 40% in fuel consumption when compared to gasoline engines. The smart fortwo's fuel consumption is rated at 4.2 litres/ 100km for combined highway and city driving (highway: 3.8 litres/100 km, city: 4.6 litres/100 km).   http://www.thesmart.ca is the website for smart canada. If you have seen Italian cars than you may have seen several cars that have the Aveo look over in Europe.   Here in the U.S. so far that Smart car is not considered very smart when you consider the high price, styling, small size, poor fuel economy for such a small car (Mitsu engine), and still greater chance for serious injuries because of its weight regardless of acceptable rated crash tests buy one of the two crash test organizations. One can buy a number of larger cars here that get as good of mileage or better with more room for the same or less money. The combined fuel mileage for city/hwy is about 70 MPG (imperial gallon). I think there are no fuel powered cars in the USA that can even get close to that!   The current smart car in USA and Canada gets an average combined fuel consumption rating of 5.6 litres/100km of travel. I don't believe there are any cars for sale in both USA/Canada that match that.   My aveo sedan uses an average of about 7.6litres per 100km for combined driving which is almost double the fuel a new smart CDI would use! Replying to: richard1haines (May 16, 2008 3:12 pm) The Smart diesel is not available here in the states. The gas aspirated diesel Smart estimated economy is 30 city 40 highway. There are a number of cars that can do that or pretty close to it. The hybrids definately can.   The Smart would be a great car in the inner cities like Chicago, New York, Montreal, Toronto, etc., for parking.

I just bought an Aveo and have owned a Smart for a year. They are oranges and grapefruits. The Aveo being the grapefruit. I love my Smart for making quick trips and as a commuter car(as its intended design). The creature comforts are much nicer in the Smart. The Aveo has much more horsepower and much more room. I haven't owned my Aveo long enough to compute gas mileage, but I am betting it will come close. Love both my cute, little and practical cars.
