The smart fortwo's fuel consumption is rated at 4.2 litres/ 100km for combined highway and city driving (highway: 3.8 litres/100 km, city: 4.6 litres/100 km). The new CDI smart car goes on sale as a 2009 model in Canada later this year. The combined fuel mileage for city/hwy is about 70 MPG (imperial gallon). I think there are no fuel powered cars in the USA that can even get close to that! The current smart car in USA and Canada gets an average combined fuel consumption rating of 5.6 litres/100km of travel. I don't believe there are any cars for sale in both USA/Canada that match that. My aveo sedan uses an average of about 7.6litres per 100km for combined driving which is almost double the fuel a new smart CDI would use!
