#1 of 3 find out details & info specifically for my car using vin number by nvrsbr

Jan 15, 2008 (2:46 am)

does any1 know the "break down" of vin numbers for 2000 lincoln ls v8? ya know like "the 8th number indicates ____" (thats just an example i dont really want to know what the 8th digit means or if it even does mean anything). if im crazy and such phenomenon doesnt even exist or just nobody knows what the hell im trying to ask then at least tell me how to find out where my particular vehicle was "born". like where did it come off the assembly line? and the exact month & year this particular one was manufactured.

thanx in advance for any help,
nvrsbr

oh and am i the only one who thinks it would be very helpful if the vehicle year was indicated? or even if it was shown in the box to the left of each comment that says how many posts that member has and when theyve been a member since

This is right out of the shop manual.

For a sample VIN: 1LN M M87 A 0 Y Y 600001

1LN -- FoMoCo (Lincoln), USA
1LJ -- Same as above, but incomplete vehicle

M -- Active safety belts all positions, driver & front passenger front & side air bags
F -- Active safety belts all positions, 2nd gen driver & front passenger air bags
L -- Active safety belts all positions, driver & front passenger air bags

M87 -- 8 cyl
M86 -- 6 cyl

A -- 3.9 litre V8
S -- 3.0 litre V6

0 -- check digit

Y -- manufacturing year 2000 (not sure what happens after Z)

Y -- Wixom assembly plant
S -- Pilot plant, Allen Park, Michigan

The last six digits are the assembly sequence.

It's clear from this alone that the original concept was much bigger than what ended up happening, what with incomplete vehicle codes & a separate set of characters for number of cylinders and exact engine type. Oh well.

As far as I know, the manufacturing date appears only on the window sticker, in the lower right-hand corner. The last six digits on mine are 04 20 00, and I'm not sure that's the actual build date.

the last part of the original post came out incorrect. i mean here on this site user/member profiles should indicate year of the vehicle. and in discussion forums post titles or headings (whatever u wanna call them) or the small margin on the left of each comment which contains "total posts:" and "member since ___" should also show the year of the vehicle being discussed in that post. as many things can vary from year to year some changes minor but some very important.
