We haven't made a final decision yet, but we are pretty much set on selling the Mailbu and keeping the Camry for the log haul. We might possibly take your advice to sell both and buy a "newer" used car. But I have such a good impression of the Camry that I trust keeping this car for another 5 years. At that point we will likely be in a whole different situation by then, with new preferences and maybe even new options with the way hybrids, etc. are becoming widespread.

Took a look at that model Camry last week. Think you made the right decision. What you can see by comparing GM with the Japanese is that the further back you go the worse GM products look in comparison. That means they're catching up rapidly, I guess. Recently drove a mid nineties Pontiac Grand Prix. Hideous interior. My 05 Malibu Maxx, for all the snide comments when the new model arrived, is actually quite pleasant. My memories of the previous platform rental car were not.

Ditch the Camry and keep the Malibu. We have a 1998 Malibu with over 150,000 miles and minor maintenance issues. It has been real dependable and we still drive it. It drives as good with 150,000 miles as a lot of new lower end cars. It has the V6 and AT. Good luck whichever way you go!

exactly, GM maybe looking much better, but I think they haven't changed its guts to it though. The engine is certainly nothing to rave about, its average with its 4spd transmission, and what year is this? The engine constantly searches for which gear, hesitation, jumpy and this is the 08 models.

Get rid of that POS malibu ASAP!!! My fiance had an '01 and it was nothing but problems. We ditched the thing and picked up a Pilot.

Littlepunk, there is a huge lawsuit again GM right now for the manifold problems on the Malibu....as well as other cars. This is pretty late in the game because claims are due the 27th....I think. Take a look at the site below for more info:

FYI, I sold the Malibu over the summer via craigslist. I got my asking price of $3950 80,000 miles.

Although out of topic, a 2007 Ford Taurus (older body style) is now going for less than $6,000 private party on Craigslist. I try to encourage all the poor people to go with a 2007 Ford Taurus because of its worst resale value, efficiency, space, V6 power, fuel economy, age, miles, reliability, styling, dependability, used car availability, etc, instead of a 10 year old Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. It's a hot deal for the poor people, and the Taurus is only one year old.

I'm happy that you made your choice in keeping the Camry! We had a 1997 Chevy Lumina with the 3.1 engine, which your Malibu also has. We replaced two intake manifold gaskets, an alternator, a water pump, and numerous radiator repairs were required. I felt nervous driving the Lumina as it stranded me many times, even though I take pride in maintenance of my vehicles. We sold it with 105k miles with a huge sigh of relief.
We have had a 1997 Camry for over 8 years now and it has never had a single problem. We just maintain it per the owners manual with the exception of using synthetic engine oil and transmission fluid. It has over 126k miles now and we plan on keeping it till it dies, which will likely be around 300-400k miles. Without exception, my Honda and Toyota mechanics say to steer clear of most of the GM engines as they all have similar problems. All you have to do to see I'm not blowing smoke is by looking at similar age Camrys and Malibus on Auto Trader. You'll see boatloads of high mileage Camrys and very few Malibus with high miles. Again, best wishes for you with your Camry!
