My wife and I own a 2007 Malibu and a 1998 Camry, and we have to decide which one to keep now that we just leased a 08 Honda Pilot for extra space now that we are parents. I'll give some details, and would be interested to see what different people thin is the more reliable and less expensive vehicle to keep for the long run (3-5 more years, or until major repairs are needed). The 98 Camry has 126K miles on it. The 01 Malibu has 80K Miles on it. The Camry needs new tires immediately, while the Malibu has another 30K left on the tires. This expense is something for me to consider. The Camry theoretically gets better gas mileage, although I haven't tested either car's actual MPG recently to see if aging has changed them. The Camry has a better reputation for long term reliability, but then again the Malibu has 45K less miles on it. Major repair history for the two vehicles is: Camry: No problems so far Malibu: Fuel Pump replaced at 70K Personally, I like the way the Malibu drives (V6) more than the Camry (V4), but it's not important enough to make me favor it. The most important thing is which car will last longer and cost us less over the next few years. Maybe the rule of thumb is keep the car with less mileage? Maybe the Camry's reputation supersedes the mileage difference? What do you think? Thanks for any advice! |

Correction: We own a 2001 Malibu, not a 2007. I could not find how to edit my original post.

Thanks for the input so far...the responses have been mixed, so I'm eager to see what the majority will favor after more responses. Tom

I have an 05 Maxx which I love, so I'm not a Chevy hater. Drove the 97+ 'Bu on one occasion as a rental car. It had been driven hard and put away wet so that may have influenced things. I was struck by how uncomfortable that car was. Seemed to have much less space than my 01 Hyundai Elantra. Assume it's got the 3.1 engine. Didn't that have manifold problems? With the Camry, (from memory), it seems like the I-4 had good durability and the six was the sludgemaster (or did that come earlier). If I'm right in my recollections, I think I'd favor the Camry. Haven't checked tire sizes, assume they're different. If not, think about swapping the tires. |

Id prob keep the camry, you could prob sell it right now for as much as the bu...which means the bu will depreciate faster....sel it now while the mileage is right, if you keep it and run 127 k miles like the camry... nobody will buy it...I dont know many people willing to buy an american car with 100k plus miles... whereas a camry... or accord.. is good for 250 and people know that. good luck Caaz |
