Anyone Object To Buying A 2008 GP GXP?

As far as old tech is concerned, I'm just wondering in what way? If my top two picks right now (2008 Charger R/T AWD, 2008 Grand Prix GXP) were to be compared side-by-side, where would the Charger be considered "new tech" vs. a GXP? I like the idea of such a big engine in a mid-sized car like the GXP. I've driven mostly inadequately powered vehicles for most of my life. It would be refreshing to actually be able to take off from a red light without waiting 30 seconds. The Charger is probably a few hundred pounds heavier (or it looks like it is anyway) - I'm sure the Charger needs all 340 HP it can get it's hands on. Call me a hard-headed Sicilian but I see no reason why a big engine can't be properly installed on an FWD car. I'm sure there would be some performance gains by combining it with a RWD platform, but what am I going to do - get to the Stop N Shop 1/4 second faster? Let's face it - my days of wanting to burn rubber ended in 1978 after my Ford Torino's transmission decided to make me pay dearly for my impulsiveness. 3-speed, 4-Speed or 5-speed is irrelevant to me. I don't overtax a car and in the 31 years I've been driving I've never burned out an engine or a tranny on any new car I've bought. Low resale doesn't bother me because I keep cars a long time (6 years, 12 years, 8 years since 1981). E-10 gasloine isn't very prevalent here in NYC. Doesn't matter to me anyway since I will only use the new car on weekends - I don't expect to put more than 6000-8000 per year on the car once I get it. The brakes concern me - I will CERTAINLY be looking at that issue once I start test-driving.

Replying to: cfazzari (Dec 31, 2007 2:32 pm) I like V-8 RWD cars, for my early life was all RWD cars, solid rear axles. My choice would be the Dodge Magnum or the Charger with the Hemi..over the GXP. I certainly do not want to offend any GP-GXP owners, for some of my favorite cars owned were the 74,76,and the 77GPs/LJ editions with the big-block V-8s.. Chrysler as a company is not in great shape with ownership liable to change again within a few years and the dealers will be thinned out..Not a Chrysler fan, but I do not wish to see them fail!!!! America needs the manufacturing might of Detroit, it's part of our freedom.. My business career involved lots of driving and many cars. Due to the amount time spent driving over years my "must have" is a. tight suspension and round tires-balanced to perfection. Mechanical problems are not prevalent complaints. I have lived in Fla full time since 5/02, and for the previous 14yrs Fla was a winter event only for 4 months.. E-10 will be a must have for the political climate in NYC.....It's been in Michigan for the past 10yrs in some of the cut-rate operations. Lousy mileage and no gusto. I will order a 08 Mustang GT before our govt outlaws fun......Golf carts are no fun..

The 77s (Montes, Cutlass, GPs and Regals) were and still are my all-time favorite cars - but at 17 years old, I wasn't in any position to own one. My first new car was a 1981 Grand Prix and the suspension on that car was just amazing...best I've ever owned. I like the interior of the GXP much more than a Charger, the Mopar just looks metallic and cheap to me. If I do decide on the Charger it will be an AWD. I simply will not drive an RWD here in NYC. Between the AWD and DVD-Nav my wife insists on, I'm looking at 34K for a brand-new one. I guess my only question to you now is - Is there any specific reason you would rule out a 2007 or 2008 GXP?

My S/C V-6 sucks gas, handles poorly, noisey, but was a good buy and I will drive it happily knowing that it is cheap transportation. I will probably keep it after the mustang arrives sometime in late winter. Cars and houses will be good buys in 2008. They don't make FWD race cars----my answer to your question on the GXP. It's your money..The Hemi Dodge is not a good value--$22.5 reasonable price..I was recently widowed after 55yrs. so I can get back into my passions of the motor world and other activities.. |

I am in the process of purchasing a 2001 grand prix at a very low price it has 67000 miles on it. I currently own a landrover freelander that needs an engine. Afetr research I would suggest that Landrover made a huge mistake when they marketed the freelander. Any suggestions on the 2001 grand prix. I don't plan to keep it for ever. I just need some transportation.

Replying to: sjennings1 (Jan 15, 2009 10:59 am) I was given a 1987 Cougar XR7 in August 2005 that needed a paint job and some suspension work, plus new carpet and headliner. I figured $6K should have turned it around. I'm up over $15K on the car and while I don't regret it, I certainly will never do that again. Point is - once a car reaches a certain amount of repair dollars, get rid of it.

I've been looking around for a fair weather car, like an LHS, Concorde, Bonneville V8 (Northstar had lots of problems so that's out), and I just thought (bing!) of the Grand Prix GXP. It's a proven ohv V8 similar to what's been used for years in trucks and other critters, the car was engineered for the torque regarding the half shafts and wheel/tire/strut package. Tire Rack has snows for the GXP now, that was a slight problem given the front and rear tires are different sizes. I see four or five different brand tires that are made in both F and R sizes which will allow of-a-set replacements. I'm just getting started in my search, to me this looks like a great bargain car in that these can be had for under 15 grand |
