The current Passat is based on the current Jetta/Rabbit platform. The only similarity the Passat has with Audi is the 2.0T engine used in the Audi A4. That's where the similarities end: Passat - Transverse (side) - mounted 2.0T Audi A4 - Longitudinal (front-to-rear) - mounted 2.0T As a result, the transmissions used on each car is different - as well as other major components. Therefore: Passat != Audi.

And basically leasing an Audi is really cost-prohibitive for me. Maybe in three or four years I'll feel differently, but for right now I just can't justify it.

The new Passat was bigger, with slightly more room than her 2003. The interior, although nice, definitely looked like it was a victim of VW's bean-counters, as the materials didn't seem as upscale as her 2003 (she has the GLS with the full leather interior). The new Passat definitely has more power (200 bhp vs. 170 bhp), and better acceleration, but the 2003 seems to have the sharper, well-connected-to-the-road handling edge over the new Passat. As we keep our cars at least 10 years, and I have owned and maintained VWs for over 25 years (we currently have three VWs - the other two being my 2003 Wolfsburg Edition Jetta 1.8T and a 1997 Jetta Trek), we may revisit the Passat a few years down the road.... As far as the choice between the 2008 GLI and 2008 328xi, I would go with the GLI. The 328xi may have the BMW panache and the all-wheel drive, but IMHO, it seems that (in my area, at least) everybody and their brother owns a BMW. Sure, the free maintenance warranty is enticing, but after that warranty expires and you have to foot the bill for repairs (assuming you keep the car for more than 5 years) - you will know the true meaning of the BMW acronym - "Break My Wallet"...

I loved the zip on the GTI, but again I was disappointed there was no power seating - for 27k you'd think they'd figure something out. I am hoping the seating in the GLI is different than the GTI - there is something about the way I was sitting in the seat where I could feel strain towards the back of my neck - it's almost as if the seating position forces your neck out further and creating fatigue - strange but we'll give it another shot. Also, the Passat is really a sharp car especially in the white and it is definitely more comfortable than the GTI was and I'm sure it'll be quiter and smoother. Wow, I can't believe I'm turning into an old fart right before my eyes. Anyhow, thanks for the input guys.

Replying to: jpics (Dec 26, 2007 8:56 pm) After a number of test drives yesterday of Passats, GTI's, GLI's, EOS and you name it, but I wasn't "satisfied" from an instinctive perspective - hard to explain. Anyhow, around 9pm last nite I noticed a porter pulling a nice A4 into a spot on the lot as I was contemplating the GLI and my guy told me it must have just arrived. Naturally, I inquired about the price and the initial offer was quite attractive, which made me drive it and within the first 30 seconds, I knew that was my car. I was at the dealership until 1 am before the deal was finally closed due to my haggling, but I ended up with what I thought to be a respectable deal. The car was one-owner - clean carfax report - and I can't find any dings anywhere, which is really surprising. 33k miles, which is ok. If you guys are interested in what I paid, I'll post that, but take a few guesses. I'm not a real good haggler, but I thought I did ok, but your guesses will either confirm or deny my suspicions. The following is a link to a number of pictures of it - it's a real nice car and I've always, for some reason, considered the A4 my dream car in the sense that there was something about it that always drew my attention to it. Anyhow it's funny how a guy can try to make himself "think" he wants another type of car, but when the dust settles, it all comes full circle. Thanks guys. http://www.theautobarn.com/detail-2005-audi-a4-2_0t_quattro-2527697.html |

| Get the GLI with DSG, unless you really need AWD. It's a blast to drive. Faster than the BMW. | |
