My '09 XT surprised me last night by actually indicating 24 mpg in the trip computer during a freeway cruise. Will it do better? Time shall tell...

...and those cursed upperbody squeaks came back to point where I unmounted upper the light console find out if it, or the headliner, or something inside headliner, is what's making the loud creaks. So far, with console out, the squeeks have shuddup-ed.
My new hunch is the headliner's plastic moulding is rubbing against the windshield glass (what I thought was a mirror bracket is in reality part of the headliner!). Felt is at hand once I know for sure.
...and some of you may ask why I'm trying to fix this myself rather than let a dealer do it:
1. It takes a lot of time and distance to reach a dealer,
2. most likely the car won't make a sound when I'm there.
3. The area making the sound is easy to access and work on.

I agree that it doesn't make sense that the performance version of the Forester doesn't offer a manual. But it is probably because Subabru didn't sell many and they couldn't justify building them. The Forester, turbo or not, doesn't really have performance following that the WRX does.

I have to say that as an '07 Forester (non-turbo) owner who just completed a 1600 mile driving vacation from Chicago to NYC and back, the turbo only adds the power that the Forester desperately needs. Especially when driving through the mountains.

Equally needed is an extra gear in the transmission. The car was unable to hold a steady 75 on steep hills without dropping into 3rd. And at 75 you are turning 3,000 rpm anyway, not exactly loafing.

If they can't give the regular engine a little better torque curve, then they really need a better transmission.

I haven't seen anything in the specs about the drivers seat, am I correct that there is no manual lower lumbar support??? This would be a deal breaker for me, I need that on my long trips, CAN NOT not have it.

Lumbar support is adjustable in the optional Power seat, but not in the manual seat.
The Power seat was critical for my buying the XT - the manual seat, while better than previous Foresters, didn't feel up to long trips.

Apparently, not enough folks bought one ... from Driving Sports.com "First Drive" review of the Forester on March 7: "Now there will be some who will wail and moan that the 5-speed turbo is another special car that Subaru has killed all in the name of being more bean-counter friendly, and rightly so. Subaru never sold many 5-speed turbos, at times it was never more than 10 units a month nationally. Do not fret though. The Subaru performance lineup is set to get a lot more exciting in the next few model years. So before you curse the name of Subaru for killing your favorite, hot cute-ute, look yourself squarely in the mirror and ask yourself if you bought one."

I would like to see Subaru offer this again because it seems like it would round out the model line -- but I would never buy one myself.

Among the base 4 cylinder engines in the compact crossover class, the 175hp PZEV Forester is right at the top.

For most people, that's more than adequate, plus oil barrel prices keep going up and the 20/26 mpg is as good or better than any non-hybrid with AWD.

It's good that you have a choice, though.

An STI Forester would be sweet, but I have to admit I wouldn't be likely to buy one.

VON = Vehicle Order Number.

It preceeds the VIN, which you get after the build.

So it's probably on the assembly line in Gunma, Japan, right now!

All my Foresters have had a manual adjustment for lumbar on the right side of the seat back (driver), even the basic ones. Did they do away with this?

Yes, it's gone in the basic cloth seat. The front seat was actually a disappointment for me on my extended test drive. I found that when I leaned back on the headrest I could feel the frame being levered in the middle of the seat back and would push forward against my back. Made the seat feel rather flimsy. I am hoping the power leather seat is more substantial. The current OB cloth seat seemed more solid by comparison and my WRX seat has always felt great.
The Newport Blue is my choice of exterior colour but only comes with grey which I would not want in cloth. It looks fine but light grey is not good at hiding dirt; beige and brown are much better. Have you ever noticed that almost all stains in the car go brown?? Just rented a Malibu with grey interior last week and there were brown stains everywhere. Camellia Red is paired with grey too and I thought it looked blah. Black interior would have been a better choice there IMHO.

They re-designed most of the headrests farther forward to do well on the IIHS tests:
