What is a reasonable price for a '74 Chevy Nova? by slinger76
Dec 20, 2007 (6:51 am)
I have a 1974 Chevy Nova with a newly rebuilt 305 V8 and transmission. It is red with black rally stripes and merely needs interior and minor cosmetics. I am thinking of selling it and need to know what would be a reasonable price range for a classic like this.

Just for fun, I'll guess $2 to $3K.

Be careful with the 'classic' label, might lead you to unreasonable expectations. Is it a 2-door?

Is it a 2-door or 4-door? For the most part, the difference in value between a 2 and 4-door really diminished in the 70's, but I think the Nova might be one car where it still makes a pretty big difference. The coupe body is popular for hot rodders who want to put in a big-block or built-up smallblock. The 4-doors are pretty much just old used cars and probably won't fetch much.

I don't think the rebuilt 305 is much of a selling point, unfortunately. The 305 didn't come out until 1975, so that's not an engine that was offered in the '74 Nova. IIRC, they came standard with a 250 inline-6. A tiny 262 CID V-8 was available as an option, putting out maybe 110 hp. And several versions of the 350, with hp ranging maybe from 130-180 depending on the carb setup.

So I'll go with what Lemmer said, maybe $2-3K...but only if it's a 2-door. If it's the sedan, I'd cut that in half, unless it's REALLY nice.

It is a 2 door and it originally did have a straight 6 but replaced it with 305. So it definitely has potential for the hot rodders. Thanks for the suggestions.

Good, it's a 2 door. You can also take a look at the 'completed items' listings on ebay to get an idea what prices are getting paid.

Believe it or not, the only two displacements available from the factory in a '74 Nova were the 250 straight six and the 350 V8. The last year for the 307 was '73, and the first year for the 262 ("4.3 Litre") was '75. The first year for the 305 was '76.

My parents bought a '73 Nova new. While the bumpers gummed up the clean '72 styling, it could have been worse. The '74 had an even more ungainly 5 mph rear bumper. Workmanship was the worst of any Chevy we ever owned before or since; that said, for a car whose wheelbase was only one inch shorter than a Chevelle coupe, the car cost hundreds less than a comparably-equipped Chevelle, so we couldn't complain much. It was a six-banger with 3-speed on the floor and no power anything, but it had Rally Wheels, whitewalls, and Exterior Decor Group which included body side moldings and chrome side-window door frame and post moldings. People couldn't believe at the time that the window sticker was actually (yes, this is at the BOTTOM of the sticker), $2,625.00.

I was a big fan of the '75 Nova restyle, but I remember looking at new ones and the workmanship was no better. Loved those '75 "LN" models, a one-year only variant.

Was that good or bad?

That was GOOD! The car had Rally Wheels, whitewalls, the extra exterior moldings which made it look like a much-more expensive Nova, but the six, stick, no power steering or brakes kept the window sticker down.
