Comparison Test: Ford Mustang Shelby GT vs. 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI
- So why compare two cars whose target customers are so different? Well, first of all, they cost the same. The STI is slightly pricier at $39,440, only marginally more than the $39,180 Shelby. With as-tested prices within $300 of each other, the reality of cross-shopping these two on price alone isn't an arguable point. (more)

Very true. The rwd coupe, however, does need the sports package (or whatever they call it).

There's just no reason why the STi needs to look the way it does. If Subaru could get the Impreza platform to the level of styling of, say, an Audi (or even Honda), their sales would probably increase dramatically. The Honda Civic Type R sedan (sold in Asia) is a great looking small car. No Subie comes close.

At least the new Evo is moving in a more upscale direction.

This is the first year for the STI.

Take a peek at a 2007 STI Limited. They dropped the flashy wing and added leather and a moonroof, and kept pricing flat.

I think Subaru is very likely to do the same thing with the current model, i.e. different editions and variations will appear and the car ages.

Look at the Mustang, they have a special edition every year, it seems.

I'm familiar with the limited and kinda wish that I had taken the limited plunge. As it was, the local Audi dealer made it just so easy to buy my third Audi that I really couldn't refuse. That was unlike the local Subie dealer that seemed to sizing me up like fresh meat.

Anyhow the Subie sales guy is going to call me when they get an STi (January) and I'll bet they won't let me take it for a spin.

So I'm holding out to compare the Sub, Evo, and a couple of Audis (TT... either the "S" or 3.2... and the A5). Unlike some folks, I've had great luck with the four ringed KrautMobile and would not hesitate to get another.

Subaru dealers should be re-trained to sell the STI.

Problem is, you get a bunch of 16-18 year olds coming in that just want to go for a free joy ride, and won't exactly follow the break-in procedures...

Yeah, if I were to buy an STi, I would not accept one with more than 10 miles on it.

Same here, no doubt about it.

So there's the catch. What do you do with that young looking guy that walks in for a test drive? It's a tough call.

You can't just run a credit report on everyone, not without their permission. You may offend some merely by asking. Not everyone will call ahead to make an appt, either.

I think each dealer (or dealers in the same region) should have one "demo" car, but that can get expensive, too.

I know that here, in Fairbanks, if I go to the Subaru dealership and request a test drive, they prep the car, take my license info, and send me on my way. There is no representative from the dealership with me. This is the first dealership at which I had that experience. Every other one had a rep (usually a sales person who would flaunt their ignorance throughout the drive) go with me. But then, I never go to the dealership with the intent to drive a performance car.

An interesting conundrum, no doubt. If you have a customer interested in a performance car, would you not want to flaunt its performance? Along the same lines, would you not want to also show its durability? A demo car might just be the ticket, and could be a compelling sales pitch in terms of commanding a higher price on the new cars actually sold to the customer. Then again, I have never been a car sales insider, so this is all just speculation to me.

Around there, though, I hear the most frustrating part of looking to buy a new performance car is finding one without already having purchased it in advance. That, in itself, might be reason enough to have a "not-for-sale" demo car on hand. But who knows; I do not see any STi or WRX vehicles sitting on the lot up here. Ever. There sure are plenty on the road, though!

I guess Subaru's problem is the STI is being cross-shopped with the A3 and 3 series. Yet to Audi and BMW, those are not special edition cars, nor are they rare.

Problem is, to the customer, they're price the same way. They don't know the difference, nor do they care.

The STI is Subaru's M3, or S4 if you're an Audi shopper.

I kind of doubt a BMW dealer would just toss the keys to a brand new M3 to a teenager.

It just happens more often at the Subaru dealer due to the lower price point.
