Comparison Test: Ford Mustang Shelby GT vs. 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI - So why compare two cars whose target customers are so different? Well, first of all, they cost the same. The STI is slightly pricier at $39,440, only marginally more than the $39,180 Shelby. With as-tested prices within $300 of each other, the reality of cross-shopping these two on price alone isn't an arguable point. (more)

Then I feel sorry for them, unless they are passing me in the snow. To me, though, what is insanely wrong with the STI is it's price. Nearly $40k for this car is just plain dumb. Seriously, step back and look what else one could buy for $40k. There si no way the car is worth it. Comparing a $40k GT-500 to a $40k STI is, well, there is no comparison. Of course, you won't find a $40k GT-500 anywhere, at least, not for the moment. Heck, for $40k, I would buy a GT for $26k (or less), toss on a blower, drive circles around anything else on the road and still have money left over to take a cruise with the family. or , pass on the vacation, and buy a winter beater.

A few questions. Is that MSRP of the GT to the MSRP of the STi? Second, is the GT equivilently equipped to STi? Is there still a factory warranty with that blower? and finally, what do you do when it's wet, snowy or if there is anything but perfectly smooth clean asphalt? -mike

Even though I'm one of those precious Audi drivers, I don't care very much what others think of what I drive. My last Audi was an Avant and my lady friend of the time wouldn't ride in it because it was a STATION WAGON. We have since parted ways for other reasons. But I do have my limits. I wouldn't want to be seen driving a Camry. I just hate them to pieces... it's not rational but that's the way it is But back to the STi... I have always had a soft spot for hot hatchbacks and right now the STi seems to be amongst the hottest. Just a quick addition here... the STi is expensive but the car does have a bunch of technology, with the three diffs, the strengthened engine innards, and the new suspension. |

Replying to: jlagman (Jan 04, 2008 4:08 pm) it's not really a good comparison ; except that they both happen to have a similar price and HP rating. I'm intrigued with the performance stats of the STI and also respect the vehicle's engineering . The last Impreza WRX/STI version, style wise ,was cute as a bug's ear -IMO. The 2008 Impreza/STI exterior design was throughly , inch by inch , reviewed in great detail several months ago in Automobile Magazine by Robert Cumberford, a world reknowned designer of whom every current automotive design team wants good grades. The results were quite poor - he cut the styling to shreds on this new vehicle. Everything clashes in his opinion. Fuji Heavy Industries needs to unload the architects of this body style ASAP. If you think it's pretty, say so and I'll respect that. I don't and undoubtedly, others out there feel the same. It could have been a dynamite package with the mechanicals it has. I wonder how many of you Subie lovers are buying it for reasons other than the mechanicals. If looks were taken into consideration in this comparison , the Mustang would be victorious. I think the Shelby GT is overdone , but a GT 500 sans stripes is oh, so pretty. My tastes run with the new Bullitt- understated and Steve McQueen cool. |

Replying to: ateixeira (Jan 04, 2008 11:19 am) BTW, I do think that cars are ever a good investment unless you either screwed someone over when you bought, or hosed someone when you sold it....or both. Hold on.....just saw another Shelby get $600k at BJ.
