Right before I come to a stop in my 01 Jimmy (automatic, 4x4) It makes a clunk noise. Thought it was the Ujoints but I just replaced them and the seal where the drive shaft goes into the transmission and it still makes the noise right before I stop. Tranny fluid is full not burnt and filter is 5 months old. Is this a tranny issue or something else? It sounds and feels like its right where the drive shaft goes in... Thanks for any help.

It was the tranny. Acouple weeks later from my last post ^ I shifted into reverse and clunk/bang reverse went in the pan and I was 89 miles from home! Was able to get it home but it was hard to get it to shift into 2nd, 1st would try and red line on me so had to baby it to get it to shift. Once it got out of first it ran normal... Well here goes another Grand in the truck.. After I put a new transmision in it, it gets the FOR SALE sign.

I have a 98 GMC Jimmy with 131k on it.. Just recently had the 3-2 shift solenoid replaced as I was having shifting issues. Now, I'm having problems with 1st gear. It won't shift without backing off the accelerator(RPM's get to 3000 to 3500 or higher). Once I ease off the gas, it will shift into 1st, but then I have to ease into it, to get it to go into 2nd. It won't get into OD either Once I clear about 35 mph, it runs fine. My ABS sensor comes on, the check engine comes on and off, sometimes the airbag light comes on too. It was a new to me truck and I replaced the tranny in 2008, with a used one. When I had the 3-2 solenoid replaced, they had to remove the valve body due to it being melted inside. Did not smell anything burning when it happened. Any ideas as to what's causing this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Same as mine but mine happend when I put it into reverse and lost 1st and reverse. You described it exsactly how mine was struggling to get into 2nd and like you, once I was in 2nd it ran fine. But im afraid theres no easy fix. I tried to take the cheap way out and get a junkyard (clean and inspected) tranny. I swapped trannys and the junkyard tranny had no reverse either but forward was fine... So took that one back out took it back and got refund but was out the 70 bucks for fluid and filter.. Needless to say I went and bought a rebuilt one with a 1 year warrenty for 800 and now selling the jimmy for 3000 or best offer with the tranny warrenty. Either gonna have to rebuild or buy another sorry man and good luck.

I had a 1994 Blazer and did the same thing and ended up dumping about $2800.00 to$3,000 for rebuilt transmission then it started all over but I am a fishing guy and love to horse around on the icy lakes getting set up for Ice fishing got packed so much with slush and snow So I got the shifting rods bound up so much was not going into gear all the way. (Take Note) I did go to school for mechanic's but ONLY 1st year but learned alot about trans and this one stumped me I also had brakes and engines so IF you will don't stick money until asking alot of questions to friends neighbors and relatives ( I have this saying .. ( It's NOT What You Know, It's Who you know ) Hope I kinda helped you out but, I am not the smart one either as you have read LOL !! Good Luck !

#68 of 71 2001 Jimmy slow to shift by kbarrera

I have a 2001 Jimmy w/ OD transmission that is very slow to shift in all gears. If you are very gentle with the throttle it will shift at approx. 2500 rpm but under normal acceleration it will shift at approx. 3000 rpm and sounds like she's working the engine extremely hard. Gas mileage in town is very poor (10mpg or less) but going down the highway it is respectable (20 mpg or more). I have serviced the transmission, fluid not burnt no metal and slight clutch material evident. Transmission doesn't seem to be slipping, only shifting late. I suspect this transmission must shift electronically. Is there any way to confirm this or to pinpoint what I need to replace?

#69 of 71 Won't move in Reverse by tbfiii

Aug 31, 2012 (7:17 am)

I have a 2000 Jimmy auto transmission 4-wheel drive. Yesterday as I was leaving work the transmission slipped out of gear into neutral but as soon as I let of the accelerator it went back into gear then began the hard shifting between 1st and 2nd. I had to let off the gas each time to allow it to shift. When I arrived home it would not shift into reverse. I checked the fluid and it appeared to be low so I added fluid and placed a large sheet of cardboard under the transmission. No signs of leakage and still not shifting into reverse. Even tried shifting into 4-wheel drive with no success. Any ideas?
