2009 Nissan GT-R vs. 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo
- Balance and body control of the GT-R are extraordinary through faster, bumpy bends that will have the 911 unsettled enough to make the driver lose confidence. I had a number of heart-in-mouth moments in the Turbo trying to keep up with the GT-R, even with the Porsche's suspension set to its harder Sport setting. (more)

Greetings:

I would like to wish everyone ( all car lovers ) a Merry Chrsitmas and a Happy New Year, and Happy Holidays! Hoping that no one person takes any of our bantering ( back and forth ) personal, as I do not.. it's continues to be fun to try to grab ones attention by " bad-mouthing " his car a little. We wouldn't be on this forum if we didn't love cars , our own as well as others! I have a C2S , but man I want a 3 series 2 door coupe BMW ! Maybe next year if the wife wouldn't have a cow.. but not likely.Someone once told me to never ding a mans' wife, car or dog... least of all his dog! So on that note...have a good holiday and enjoy your car. and be careful out there!

Unfortunatley, many on this thread are biased. The GT-R will hurt the 911. The GTR will be ~ 67K vs 130K for the porsche which is slower in 0-60, tied for quarter mile, slower in slalom. Although not many who can afford a porsche think that price is an issue, it is hard to justify spending 60K more for a car that offers no significant performance advantage.

Another guy who prostrates himself to "numbers". If you think 0-60, 1/4 mile and slalom are the entire story, perhaps you should just sit on the throne and read road tests every morning. Why dare drive any of them and risk finding out there is actually more to performance than those particular numbers?

By the way, this isn't a "Porsche" bias by me. The $135k 911 Turbo can "outnumber" the $200k+ Ferrari 430 in every category, but there is a 3 year waiting list to get the 430 and I would never suggest that the Ferrari owner is wasting that extra $65k+. I also remain quick to suggest anyone considering a $55k Boxster to give the $32k Honda S2000 a try. It is a great car and very worthy competitor. But I would NEVER send them to look at the Nissan 350Z. The numbers look the same on paper, but the performance behind the wheel goes from razer sharp to pathetically dull.

I think you need to get out more.

In the aforementioned full test of the GT-R, it was the driver's conclusion that the GT-R was more refined and less punishing that the 911 turbo, and I did not describe the 911 as "unsettled". If I was senior management at porsche, I would be worried...very worried. I would think to my self, even though I am primarily a sports car company, I had to create a huge SUV to inflate my poor sales, and now NISSAN, a company that was almost bankrupt a few years ago, is breathing down my neck. It is unfortunate that Nissan won't send enough GT-Rs to the states to create a large dent in porsche's bottom line. And by the way the 350Z outsells the Cayman/Boxter 3 to 1. I can't say for sure which car is better until I drive the GT-R, but I know that the GT-R will be a problem for porsche.

I am sure Porsche senior management appreciates your concern on their behalf, but I am equally sure they don't share it.

In the perenial quest for what car will be the 911 beater, we've had the Corvette, Viper, Acura NSX, AM V8, and a bunch of others try their best over 4+ decades. This year 911 sales will set another record.

I too think it's curious that Nissan is apparantly taking on Porsche in it's marketing of the GT-R when it can't match the agility and engineering prowess of Honda's S2000 with the 350Z, can't match the entry level sportiness of Honda's Accord with the Altima and can't match the driving dynamics of the BMW 3 series with the G35 sedan. (The latter based upon my personal test drives over the last few weeks as I have been sedan shopping).

So now we are to believe, from (advertising supported) reviews, that the 3,900+/- pound GT-R is going to have Porsche 911 Turbo owners turning in their keys. Please. As habitat suggests, there is a hell of alot more to the workings of a great sports car than can be measured by "numbers". I'm not sure the GT-R would have me turning in the keys to a Corvette Z06, if I owned one. The GT-R is closer in weight to Porsches "huge SUV" than it is to the base Boxster.

P.S. While we are on the subject of numbers, Cayman/Boxster sales for 2007 are going to approximate 12,000 and 350Z sales are around 18,000. What math class did you attend to get a 3 to 1 ratio?

Porsche senior management realizes that in order to create a car that performs like a $100,000 Porsche for $70,000 requires some cost cutting engineering (compromise).

You get what you pay for.

I am not sure if you have had a frontal lobotomy, but to refresh your memory the Altima is sportier than an Accord. Granted that 350Z sales have decreased in last couple of years, it will sell close to 19k units this year, and sold 23k units last year, and 28k units the year before, the boxster/cayman will only sell 9500 units this year, while that is not 3 to 1, it is pretty amazing how nissan is able to outsell the "superior" boxster/cayman and S2000 combined by 7k units.

With that kind of flawed logic, the LS460 must have had a lot of cost cutting compared to the MB S550.

The LS has won every comparison test, is far more reliable, and is $25k cheaper. a toyota yaris is more reliable than the S550.

Merry Christmas everybody From Canada
No hard feelings people
The GTR is a new breed
squashes a vette or a porshe
and is 10x more stable a platform
using a v6 it makes the vette v8 engine seem retarded
the transmission is new age
wind turbolence Drag is slick
sucks air that would normally buffet the front of the car out the side areo slits
with full functionality
this car is new league back to the drawing boards for everyone
2 sec demolish of a porsche on the track !
no competittors says Nissan head engineer
Pass vettes like they are standing still on the track
at 3875 pounds it still cold clocks the previous best cars !
Anyone ,Car enthusiasts that aren't over the top wowed ,are prejudice ,and probably jealous too.
Kudos Nissan ! Think you can come out with a NISMO model please, to make the fools that are prejudice ,smile
I saw the video couple years back gtr drive line on an early test mule using a g35 body the vette had no traction off the launch squeals like a stuck pig and barely moves with the GTR the sheer traction on launch is incredible as well all wheel drive for winter and wet conditions
the Italians are embarassed at 70,000$ unheard of
considering the US dollar is down 40% I'd Say This is the best deal possible price wise and there is no competition on the road at this time low volume makes this thing elite status among buyers
no problem to sell them around the world ,
While GM is busy building another Vette that has more power ,which is rediculous they don't need power they need traction. Porsche only needs a redo too rough of a car to compete in this league.
Nismo GTR X 18 PSI turbos + 300 HP

Well hope you all have a good new years

I wonder what kind of MPG the Nissan gets? Porsche 911 they get pretty good mileage. I need to know this so I can figure my budget for when I get a new GT-R.
