Title Fight: Evo X vs. WRX STi - At almost the same moment, Mitsubishi and Subaru have slammed the door on the past. The flame-spouting, wheel-churning rally-specification sedans of recent years have been tossed onto the ash heap, and in their place we find the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X and 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI — two cars that are about sophistication as well as speed. After reading several reviews of each model on other websites, I had a feeling the STi would come out on top, if only slightly. Being the owner of an Evo VIII, I must say that I am more interested in the new STi, mainly due to its relative lack of electronic nannies. I'd hate for my $35K ride to feel like a car from Playstation's Gran Turismo.

You know I'm a bit surprised that the EVO isn't keeping up with the STI this time around. But thems the breaks. EVO and STI went plush and traded off some performance and more posh for the older guys who like a comfy ride and don't want a boy racer car but taking the edge off isn't good. You sell the most cars to the guys with the most money so we get a softer car as a result. Mitsu needed more money so more posh.

Just being big does not mean it is a financially solid company. Look at GM, Ford, Chrysler. Big companies....but suffering financially

How does reliability play into this comparision? I have always viewed Mitsu as having below average reliability and build quality, with Subaru having better than average reliability. This is important given these two cars are packing their manufacturers most advanced tech.

kurtamaxxxguy, a dual-clutch automated manual transmission supplied by Aisin is already in the works and is planned for the MY2009 or MY2010 STI.

Not anymore. The divorce with Chrysler helped reliability big time.

According to Consumer Reports, the 2008 Outlander along with 2008 Honda Element have the best predicted reliability in its class beating both Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4: CR best predicted reliability. No Mitsubishis listed among worst.

Also the Outlander and the Eclipse made the CR top 5 most reliable in its class. Again, no Mitsubishis listed in the least reliable category: CR List

Mitsubishi is stepping up in this show down against Impreza w/ Ralliart (230HP/250TQ, 24K$). I wonder whether Subaru is going to improve the current WRX a litle. On paper, Ralliart seems more appealing at this point.

Just got the March 08 issue of Car and Driver. It contains a shootout between the WRX STi, the VW R32, and the Evo X GSR. The Evo wins the comparison. Car and Driver's website has not been updated with the March issue yet, but you should be able to pick it up in print on the news stands.

OK Subaru, lets have it already, you know; the hi tech awd system that'll do 1 G. on the skid pad, the bigger brakes, the paddle shifters connected to better ratios; then maybe I can safely give Vishnu $1K for a 500 HP STeyeeyeeye!

Once again, the EVO beats the STi. I'd still buy the Sti over the EVO for the 5 door practicality.
